Transport Secretary resigns

We must have honest, credible and capable politicians and even more so, cabinet ministers. But perhaps we should also be a little sensible as to where the line is drawn? This lady was mugged and made an error of judgement concerning a phone over 10 years ago. Yes she held BJ to account over dishonesty but he was surely in a different league.
I feel sorry for her but this story also adds to my greater concern that we will never attract ‘normal but capable’ people into politics

Imagine working in a job where people are paid to actively try to find misdemeanours you made a decade ago so you have to resign.

We accept that as the norm, and then moan that the MPs we have aren't capable enough people.

We get the Government we deserve.

It's ever been thus... however, Momentum really accelerated this type of politics.... ie using social media and hack journalism to simply discredit the party opposite rather than practice politics for the benefit of the nation.

That article uncovers a greater sin than misleading the police.

Hailing from the left of Sheffield (what?) Ms Haigh has connections with Sue Gray.

Worse than that, imagine working in a job where those that are on your side leak it to the press…

I feel sorry for her. It not as of she lied about being an economist.
I know a few people who worked with her. The reason she got that role was because of her skills and background as an economist.

So was she a practising economist when doing that role? Yes she was. Was her job title an economist? No

My job title is way role complex to explain what I do. One of my new responsibilities is to try and simplify and cut through the jargon and guff so it will be changing.

One of the few good people in this government. This is ridiculous, Starmer should not accept the resignation
It would weaken any focus on the partner beating ukip type. It's a distraction and she has paid the price for it. I am sure she will be back in the future

Be a bit pointless asking Morgan McSweeney to write her resignation letter late Thursday night if you’re not going to accept it.

It does seem minor but also odd. If i was mugged and told police my mobile was stolen. Recieved a later call from police they had detected it had been turned on I would have just apologised and said I had found it.. If called in for questioning would find no reason to go to expense of legal advice for something so minor and then on instructions make no comment to police.

This has got all the hallmarks of an inside job from No10 given the timing and how brief the Starmer response was.

To be fair, between the student politics around P&O and apparently going rogue in the pay negotiations with train drivers, signing off on their 15% pay rise when that wasn't what HMT wanted, it hadn't been the best start.

Its a shame as she definitely seemed one of the more proactive ministers, and as transport minister she seems to have done more in 6 months than the Tories did in 13 years, but I suppose you have to fall on your sword to maintain the standards, especially after the last government. I don't really care about this crime, but I suspect the press will, all a bit of sorry state political journalism.

Exactly. This one has been 'in the post' for some time.

With the Assisted Dying debate dominating political headlines today and over the weekend, last night was the optimum time to take care of this bit of outstanding Cabinet business.
