London's Tower Bridge has become stuck open causing major traffic issues in the capital.

The famous landmark*was scheduled to open this afternoon*to allow a large wooden tall ship through, but it appears to have become jammed in place.

City of London Police said the 127-year-old crossing had been closed to both traffic and pedestrians "due to technical failure".

Avoid the area!

Some mildly interesting facts. It took 8 years to build, and was opened in 1894. It was originally powered by steam, but was converted to electricity in 1976. It generally opens around 800 times a year. In 1952, a number 78 bus with 20 passengers had to jump the gap when it began opening as the bus was crossing. The actor Gordon Jackson (George Cowley in The Professionals) was arrested one afternoon in January 1981 for sliding down one of the blue curved suspension rods naked, aside from a dishevelled tartan dressing gown.

Ah that explains it - just stood there with the family for 20 minutes waiting for a ship to pass through!

In one of the towers sits a dummy to represent one of the old operatives when it was steam powered. Was listening to Danny Baker one day and this guy phoned in to put him forward as the rudest man in the world. Bloke was a van driver who crossed the bridge multiple times daily always waving and never getting a response. He wouldn’t have it that it was a dummy. Just wouldn’t accept it and swore blind he’d seen it move.
