London to Brighton bike ride

This is a naked grovel for funds.

I'm doing the London to Brighton bike ride on 21 June and am touting around for sponsors. If anyone's got any spare pennies, then please throw them my way - I'm not asking for big bucks from people who don't know me in the flesh, but £3 (the cost of a pint) would be gratefully received.

All the money will go to the British Heart Foundation, a cause close to me as my dad (who introduced me to the Albion, Sussex CCC and Harveys) died of a heart attack at a relatively early age - so it's a charity that I personally have supported for some time.

Anyone who can contribute please go to my donations page

Cheers

A small team of friends are doing it as well - tried for a 7am start but also got stuck on an 0830 start. One of the people is coming over from France the night before and parking up in Brighton and training up to London on the Saturday where we are staying near to the start - does anyone have any ideas where he can leave his motor in Brighton? Station car park I s'pose?

The station car park will be heavily stewarded and if you take a bike near it you will be terminated, they are really nasty the day before and after.

Brighton is chaos traffic wise on this day, I would think Hove Lagoon or Brighton Marina and plan your driving route out of town to avoid any main routes.

Consider it done, Gwylan.
Good luck and enjoy yourselves, everyone.

I've done the last two L2B, and have vowed not to ever do it again, as it's so dangerous even with a 6:30 start. Admittedly the vow was helped by my breaking the personal target I'd set, last year.

Mendoza, did you buy another bike, if so what did you get?.
I wouldn't worry too much about training, as the route, apart from Ditchling, is pretty much downhill all the way. The rises earlier on, (pre M25 tunnel) will be so bottle-necked with people walking you'll never ride up them, away.

I ended up getting a ridgeback cyclone. Love it

The were some cheeky uphills at Turners Green and leading up to Ditchling there is a long gradual uphill thats a killer. I didnt make it up the Beacon last year, so that has got to be the aim this year.

Time is not an issue as I go in big group and we normally wait for each other and meet at check points

The easiest way up the beacon is to use the whole road, as it falls away for a bike length or 2, on each bend. But I guess that wont be an option the later the day gets.

I really felt for a girl, last year, who'd had enough, by the roadsign no more than 50metres from the summit.
I wasn't close enough to shout encouragement and she look so gutted when I did pass her.

i'll be there too, 8am start (i wanted 6am, but what can you do?) Albion shirt, Gwylan?

anyhoo, if you know me, you can sponsor me at BHF London to Brighton - Adam Hebborn's Fundraising Page

otherwise sponsor my friend, above, he asked first!

.

I'm 7.30 - I wanted 6.00 too.

I'm trying to get a company to sponsor me to wear a corporate shirt - but if not, I'll wear an Albion shirt.

I'll sponsor you Adam. I think it's fair enough to sponsor fellow riders ... but it will just be the £3 I asked from other people.

It's my first time - I'm a bit daunted by it. I cycle to the station regularly but that's 3 miles, this could be a bit of a toughie.

It is not as bad as it is made out to be. I did it for the first time in 10 years last year. There are numerous check points to stop have a beer, burger etc if you a leisurely ride. There are also numerous water stops, first aiders along the way.

There are 2 tricky hills for a beginner before the beacon, there is no shame in pushing, there really isnt. You wont be the only one. Once you get to the beacon it is all down hill into Brighton and you can crash on the beach at the finish line

Good on you for having a go, I was dreading it last year, but loved it so much, im doing it again this year. Will get round to sponsoring you when i get home

I'm a 7:30 starter also. I've heard that it can be a bit of a mare getting out of London so not looking forward to that. As for the Beacon I already plan to just pick my bike up and hot foot it up the hill.

It's definately a great way to test yourself cycling, with a great atmosphere.
But it is very popular, and I can't help thinking a little oversubscribed.

Sadly, as with most things, you need to be aware of some absolute nutters, either desperate to 'race', or the opposite, no road sense whatsoever.

IT's definately 2 different events, JJ, either side of the M25. I suggest you keep to the outside of the road, coming out of Clapham.
