walking down london road recently I see the co-op is soon to close.

I'm not 100% certain on this, but I'm assuming that when the new Sainsburies opens(which doesn't look that far off), the London Road one will shut also.

Could these two closures in such a short space of time finally take London Road under or will there be a sudden revival?

Aparently, according to my sauce, the Co-op has already been sold.

I dont know if its been sold as one or as units but i know its DEFINATLY been sold.

Think the Co-Op closure's been in the pipeline for a long time, pretty sure they're selling all their department stores. No great loss, they're bollocks anyway.

London Road is a DUMP. My prediction is they'll get a couple of POUND SHOPS down there.

Yeah I remember it being announced in late 2005.

The shops were crap, agreed, but it's a huge amount of space comparatively.

There are plenty of pound shops already sadly and that horrible pub, never has the name "Worlds End" been any more apprioprate.

Meopham, Kent.
The area is still prime land. I'd have thought it will go into sharp decline as it's fills with short term "budget" shops, and then eventually the council will agree some regeneration plan which will involve a host of office blocks and exclusive flats.

That probably a decade away, but I'm picturing it like the regenration of Tooley Street over the last 5 years ... for anyone familiar with that part of London.

Being so close to the centre of brighton i would imagine that the prices are high and no 'small' business could afford it and all the 'big' companies who could afford it would rather have a shop in western rd area.

Yea I was thinking it would come down to council intervention, but they will leave it a few years yet.

Yes, a Nettos or a Lidl wouldn't go amiss either.

Somewhere over there...
Not exactly London Road BUT I heard that an Ikea was going to be opened in Newhaven.

Back to London Road, its a shithole, apperently the Old Sainsburys will become a Savers (there is one on Western Road Hove bound past Gamestar)

On Western Road, the old Littlewoods will become a Primark, and the current Primark will become a New Look.

On all this info, im not to sure how realiable my source is.

It supprises me that Tesco havent gone after the Co-op site as it is massive and there is not a Tesco Extra in Brighton.

I also read that Everton are going to join forces with Tesco to build a new ground. I suggested this a couple of years ago for Brighton stating that had that happened we would have had a ground by now but was pooh poohed by a large number of people. It is good enough for Everton to do this but not BHA.

Good call

For a company that is supposedly taking over the planet, Tesco are woefully under-represented in central Brighton. I WANT one, dammit!

The Co-op has been considering closing and selling up for the last 20 years or so. The London Road site is worth loads of money if it is redeveloped , especially if it is split into small retail units with prestige appartments above.
