London Road - Fond memories

Not being a local anymore I hear that London Road is a pale shadow of its former self.

So me memory takes me back to those fond old days....

The huge Co-op - where I bought my first ever stereo.

Bellmans

Fine Fare - I was there with my mum to see Ronnie Corbett open it.

The Army Surplus Store - The shifty guy inside who always tried to sell you stuff that was the wrong size.

AA Bakers - The sports shop.

The Elephant and Castle

What was the name of that record shop near the E&C?

The Open Market

That Jewellers shop - Was it EG Routley?

I remember Woolworth having the downstairs before the fire after which it was never reopened.

Used to go down the stairs over the right in the corner where the record were and bought my first ever single there,

The co-op always had that distinctive smell (and I don't mean old ladies piss!) as does Western Rd M&S even despite its many re-fits. Both smell very different but both particular to those buildings?

I still think London Road is quality. Loads of good charity shops (including the books and vinyl heaven that is BHF), supermarkets, the mighty Cowley Club, an old-fashioned button-stitcher, Betfred, Greggs, Richer Sounds, a couple of offies that are open all hours, Duke Of York's up the road, The Branch...what's not to like?

Also that bike shop in Oxford street, Strudwicks, used to spend my pocket money in there , it not changed much, and also the post office in Oxford Street.

And the "Yellow shop" , selling all the cheap stuff, thats still there.

Co-op now closed of course.

I still think London Road is quality. It always amazes me how the many areas in and around Brighton have changed over the last 40 years.

So calling it a shithole and talking about it now, is not what this thread was started about...........Thats all.
