Shame. I used to love the toy department when I was a kid, bought all my Subbuteo stuff in there. (Quite easy to nick a few bits too!)

RIP to a Brighton institution. I still use it occasionally. Sign of the times and the demise of London Road, which still has a lot of good shops. :(

Maybe the spreading yuppie area arounfd the station will eventually reach London Road. Can't understand how it's turned into such a complete shithole.

I have no idea either.

Shops just relocate and then it began to look grotty, which in turn has caused more shops to leave.

Blimey, poor old London Road is not that bad, is it? Yes, maybe the days of the big anchor stores are over, but there is new smaller North Laine-type stuff popping up. Anyone been in that newish anarchist place just along from McDonalds yet?

I think if they could just design a better access from the station, that would help too.

my theory is it was cursed by the awful developments behind it during the '60s, such as New England House, Vantage Point and that horrible carpark.

As the high rents and rates drive businesses out of Western Road and Churchill Square, they will surely relocate to this cheaper side of town, and with the Station Developments it will rise like a Phoenix;) ;)

I reckon there will be a master plan which will involve redevelopment of the Open market which has lost its way.

I bought my first and only pair of hockey skates there for thirty bob about 65 years ago. I was a 'Devil' on the ice at the SS Brighton.
Wife has bought good linens there during visits 'over 'ome.

No, not really. It;s not the classiest of places, but you'd think it was the South Bronx the way people talk about it.
