[Travel] Liverpool away. Travel advice please.

Due to sky high prices in Liverpool, we have booked a hotel in New Brighton.

Any advice on the best way to travel to Anfield for two old farts a little past their prime in fitness?

Or perhaps a fans coach would be better.

A cab is prob about £18 (based on Uber which doesn’t currently operate there.

There are 4 direct trains an hour that take 25 minutes and cost £3.75.

I don’t know what the availability or price would be for a fans coach from New Brighton to Liverpool.

I looked at hotel costs for the Everton match the other day and in Liverpool all the hotels are pretty pricey. Not sure why they are so expensive?

Will probably go for something up the M6 instead.

Agreed. We had to lump out the best part of £150 for the Premier Inn in the city centre.

Go by Virgin trains, we did that for the FAC match - a great service, totally different to the SE England cattle trucks.

Hide the ****ing car, more like. I lived up there during the late 90s and had two cars stolen and smashed up/burnt out. Happy days.

Or look at premier inn type places on the outskirts of the city in places like Roby, Knowsley or Rainhill. They’re a bit cheaper. Provided you’re just pubbing it in the evening then there’s trains out of Lime Street at 11pm and a bit after onwards.

It’s clearly a popular place to go. We have got a twin room for £120 but lots of places esp those near the dock have sold out.

If people are driving and using the M56 to cross the Mersey at Runcorn, be aware that the Runcorn bridge is now tolled and you have to pay £2 each way on line within 24 hours of crossing https://www.merseyflow.co.uk/toll-charges You may also need to register an account. You cannot pay cash and there are no toll booths.

If you are staying on or driving via the Wirral, the Mersey tunnels are also tolled, but you can pay cash (currently £1.70 each way at toll booths). Best way through is the train or bus https://www.merseytravel.gov.uk/travelling-around/timetables/pages/bus-timetables.aspx

Otherwise come up via M6 and M62 (not tolled).

Liverpool hotels are always rammed on match weekends. Mostly due to the number of Norwiegians who fly in to watch games.

There is some match day parking at Stanley Park, but the traffic and parking around Anfield and Goodison is awful. Get the bus, train or cab locally.

From New Brighton you can get the Merseyrail train to Sandhills (via Moorfields) and get the Soccerbus to the ground. Look on Merseytravel website for more info.

I’ll probably be doing the same from Moorfields as I have a season ticket in a nearby car park.

It is, and especially when Liverpool are at home. When we faced them in the FAC, we were lucky to get a lovely room at a city centre inn. Most other guests were Liverpool fans from across Europe including both parts of Ireland.

Hotels are always really expensive when Liverpool are at home due to tourists but usually less so for Everton. Having said that weekends can be expensive as it’s quite popular for a night out. If you are looking for cheap hotels in the city centre that are OK try Tune Hotel or Printworks Hotel/Apartments. Avoid the Adelphi at all costs.


Edit. Just checked Tune Hotel is £114 for two people. Right in City Centre for beers etc. It’s an odd hotel in that anything else is extra but seems £124 gets you most things. It’s a few minutes from Moorfields for train/bus to the ground.
