Saw The Cult on Friday at the Roundhouse . Have stuck with them over the years and have seen some red hot sets and a couple of luke warm ones. This may have something to do with the level of refreshment before the gig. 3 years ago at Sonisphere was particuarally dreadful.
Friday's gig was quite simply awesome. They billed it as Electric 13 and played the whole of the Electric album in order , minus Born to be Wild. I was a bit concerned for first couple of songs as Astbury seemed routed to the spot and clinging on to the mic for dear life . Need not have worried. Clearly just needed to warm up as us 50 somethings now need to do. Stunning gig. Played the set. Went off for three minutes. (they showed a three minute film),then back on for a Love album greatest hits set intertwined with 4 songs from their 2012 Choice of Weopen , including the magnificent Embers , taken from the special edition disc. ....Went off again and finished with Sun King , Horse Nation and Dreamtime.
Absolutly brilliant gig , and long may the Cult continue to play live.

Used to love The Cult in the 80s (I know every word to Wolf Child Blues!), but didn't enjoy seeing them in Camden a few years ago. Too one dimensional. I remember Edie felt like a welcome relief...

This was an amazing show, massively under attended though. The Hope was half full at best. The Icarus Line are really worth checking out. Their most recent record Slave Vows has got some stunning reviews and will feature in the upper reaches of my albums of the year.

For fans of The Stooges, Spacemen 3, Swans, JAMC etc....

Bad For Lazarus in support were alot of fun as well.

A half full Hope can only mean thirty odd there? A shame for the band.
I saw I Like Trains there and wondered how on earth they could make money from such dates. Came to the conclusion they did not and were hoping to pick up extra fans by touring. Must be an incrediably tough existence.

I'd say there were 50/60 (The Hope's offcial capacity is 120 fact fans!), of which I reckon just over half paid. For exactly the reason you describe I guilt tripped myself into paying £20 for a T Shirt. It's pretty good but it a'int a £20 T-Shirt.

I once saw My Latest Novel (a Scottish band I who's first record I adored) touring their second album in a daytime slot at The Freebutt for TGE. There were more people on the stage than in the audience. They turned in a great performance as well. It must be soul destroying for the band. Did you see iLT at the Gloucester? I remember that one being pretty empty as well. I saw them quite a lot around that time, including a trip up to Dingwalls.

Right then, I'm getting excited about seeing the reformed Loop at The Concorde next month. Being far too young to have seen them first time round, I'm expecting an absolute feedback drenched ear-bashing. I'm sure someone will be able to confirm or deny this speculation for me.

Did not see them at The Gloucester but did at The Freebut, Concorde (part of an early Great Escape), Hope and somewhere else in Brighton but can't recall where. Coincidently their first album is released on vinyl today.

I liked the first record but it was a bit of a let down after that amazing mini album Progress/Reform. This one still gives me goosepumps

Good call. I got into I Like Trains as quite a few BSP fans were listening to them around that time. The last time I saw them live they pretty much played in a traditional style but my best memories were the early concerts when they dressed up in the railway gear and had the film backdrop playing throughout the songs. I have not listened to the last album but have enjoyed everything prior to that.

Anyone else going to Savages tonight?

I'm afraid not, a late change of heart (I was bleating earlier in the thread that I think it's going to be full of w*nkers, new fans + hype + mercury nomination = idiots), which led me to discover this is properly sold out. Tried promotional avenues and no tickets are forthcoming.

I might have a hang around outside, I didn't quite realise how much the gf wanted to see them.

We did see their first ever gig though (supporting BSP.)

Resident have got quite a few returns. Give them a call or pop in. If you're too busy give me a shout and I'll try to sort it.

Going to see Hawkwind at the Old Market tonight - but with very low expectations. It's 25 years since I last saw them and it's still Dave Brock + several others.

I heard that in an interview on 6music. Isn't that a bit strange? First gig as a big support? Luck or corporate-made band?

Off to see Editors supported by British Sea Power at Margate Winter Gardens tonight. A much maligned town but with quirky charm and great pubs.

It wasn't a big support, it was for the low key Krankenhaus dates they did testing new material for the last album at the Haunt. The announced support was cancelled at the last minute and they took the gig. The link I believe was The Quietus, where I believe they do have a couple of friends.
