Was on my way back from brighton on the M25, when i thought to myself.
What happens in 2010 after the 59 plate?

What will the next numbers be?

This year we had 08 in March and 58 will be issued from September...surely the system is now the year, less 2000 in the first part of the year, then add 50 to that number for the autumn...so for 2010 I would make it 10 and 60.

Ye but the 50 was to mark half way though the year.. so im asuming it was a percentage?

therefore 60 would be more than half!

way too confusing

Didn't they split the year to try and stop the glut of sales around the time the registration changed with crap sales for the remaining eleven months or so...better system would have been to remove the year marker from the registration entirely and go for a system they have in countries like Germany.

It is something like the first letter (or letters) represents the town or area, there are then a couple of more letters and a number, something like this:

Reason that they kept the year in it was that even though the people running car dealerships did not like the fact that they did all their business in one month, they did still like the fact that some people brought a new car every year in order to have the new numberplate. Take away the year code and there is no longer any need for these people to buy a new car each year.

That's what I thought was the reason, except you still know which year a car is, this year is 58 and 08 isn't it, which is even more obvious than a letter to determine the year?

They will presumably invent a new system, just like they did for the present one when the last one ran out.
