We converged on the Dripping Pan at 7.30 pm after a few cold ones to see Steve Coppell opening the new stand. A few Brighton shirts dotted around but the attendance was affected by the Monday game.
Rumours abound during the pre match drinks that a certain Andrei Kanchelskis may be playing for the Albion at the DP, unfortunately that potential treat never materialised.
Coppell did however put out 4 or 5 players with first team experience including Kuipers, Mayo, Not so fat now Butters, Marney and Wilkinson.
The first half was pretty uneventful with neither keeper properly tested. Scully did a nice run from 30 yards and slotted the ball into the corner 1-0 to the Albion. It was clear the supposed gulf in class between the sides was not evident and 1 Lewes player in particular caught the eye, their no 9 he was very tricky with good skills. The game ground to a 1-0 half time and a Lager reviver was very much needed.
The second half saw Lewes quite frankly batter the Albion. They looked like the div 2 squad. They look a good side and played flowing passing football on the ground rather than rely on kick and rush. Brighton went 2-0 up against the run of play but Lewes stormed back supported by a small but noisy band of Lewes fans in the stand. They clawed back to 2-2 with some nice flowing football and good finishes. They then created another great goal to go 3-2 up but the linesman made a dubious off side decision.
Albion then went to the other end to go 3-2 up against the run of play and were happy to scrape a 3-2 win and avoid huge embarressment.
All credit to Lewes who deserved to get at least a draw and watch out for their no 9 and no 5. Butters looked assured and was our best player which is not saying much at this level but Marney in particular looked out of his depth against Lewes !.
Lets hope we do not have to fall back on this lot too often next season !.
