God knows what they would do if they were a Cumbrian Council. They'd have to get round Cockermouth. Or for that matter Cornish, where they'd have to handle Brown Willy.

Being aware of LDC's interest in places on the boundary of their own district, I look forward to seeing them deal with ...

Balsdean Bottom.

Which, incidentally, is an area of very outstanding natural beauty.

The most curious thing..
In 2006 Liverpool City Council wanted to rename all the streets that had slavery associations. The idea was quickly dropped when it was realised that this would involve renaming virtually every major street in the city centre, plus innumerable others elsewhere, and after they discovered that virtually every member of Liverpool's 'great and good' in the past had some association, either as slavers, merchants, owners, supporters of the slave trade etc. It also provoked a public outcry about denegrating and denying the city's history and heritage in the buildup to the 2008 capital of culture year.

Denying and covering up your history doesn't mean it never happened - however unpleasant, embarrasing, and downright evei some of it was.

There must be loads of street names in Lewes with suggestive connotations - anyone for a twitten? Does anyone want to Mount Harry?

And how much is this bullshit costing the council tax payer?

I'm sorry but some of the people at LDC, East Sussex County council need the fffiiinnngg sack, It's a bloody joke.

Correct me If I am wrong but the Newhaven - Le Havre ferry service has now stopped for good. As I understand the french goverment pay for this service. Why the f***ing hell are Lewes District Council or East Sussex County Council not getting involved in helping to regenerate the port of Newhaven so it can handle larger ships and helping to regenerate the town. LDC and ESCC are bunch of f***ing clowns they really are.

In one word ... privatisation.

We don't do things that way in Britain. Seine Maritime has been controlled by a communist-led left-wing coalition for years. They (not the French government) own the port of Dieppe and fund the ferry service.

From the Sussex Express:-

Pledge of support for Newhaven-Dieppe ferry
Published Date: 16 December 2008

POLITICAL leaders on both sides of the Channel have given a strong commitment to work together to secure the future of the ports of Dieppe and Newhaven and the Transmanche ferry line.

Sébastien Jumel, who is Mayor of Dieppe and Vice President of the Conseil Général of Seine Maritime, led a delegation of senior politicians from Dieppe who visited Newhaven today.

They met with local MP Norman Baker and political leaders of Newhaven Town Council and Lewes District Council.

Top of the agenda for the meeting was the future of the ferry line and the programme for the regeneration of the Port of Newhaven.

Mr Jumel said, "This important meeting stresses the fact that the Transmanche ferry line is hugely important to the people of Newhaven and Dieppe.

"Our contract with LD Lines to run the Transmanche ferry has several years to run and we need to use that time to build up increases in passenger and freight traffic.

"LD Lines has a contractual commitment to run at least two return ferry crossings per day. We consider it is necessary for LD Lines to keep up the high standard of service that they have achieved."

Norman Baker MP said, "Our meeting with Monsieur Jumel and his team today was practical and businesslike.

"It shows that there is absolute determination of both sides that the ferry must continue. Our joint commitment to working for major investment in Newhaven Port will bring many commercial opportunities for Newhaven and the surrounding area.

"We need to concentrate on the right kind of public and private investment in the Port to secure its future."

Judith Ost Leader of Newhaven Town Council said, "The public authorities in France have shown their commitment to the Port through their substantial investment in the Transmanche Ferry.

"Although councils in the UK do not have such wide powers as those in France, we will continue to work hard to attract investment into the Port."

Ann De Vecchi, Leader of Lewes District Council, said, "We have made a significant contribution to the regeneration of the West Quay and we are actively involved in planning the next steps for the future of the Port.

"The ferry service is crucial to the joint interests of the people of Newhaven and Dieppe and we know that there are many ways which the two ports can work together."

Sébastien Jumel added, "The public authorities in Normandy have made a major investment in the ferry service.

"Now we want the strategic value of the links between the ports of Dieppe and Newhaven to be recognised in the economic plans for the South East of England.

"We need to take every opportunity to promote the ferry. For example, the Olympics in 2012 will attract lots of people from Europe to the south east.

"We will be able to offer them one of the cheapest and most direct routes for passengers and freight."

If it's like it used to be, the citizens of Dieppe arriving in Newhaven by ferry as fengers are met at the terminal and bussed directly into Brighton.

Lewes District council nutcases at it again....

Council lists banned road names
Keere Street, Lewes (Pic: Freefoto.com)
Lewes district has never had a formal policy on street naming before

Street names for new roads in an East Sussex town such as "Hoare Road" and "Typple Avenue" are to be banned under a new policy set out by Lewes council.

Guidelines set to be approved by the district council cabinet on Tuesday said names "capable of deliberate misinterpretation" are to be avoided.

A council report said the area "has never had a formal policy on street naming and numbering".

It said that had led to inconsistencies in road names throughout the district.

'Tip House'

The new guidelines would provide standard procedures for dealing with requests, it added.

"Aesthetically unsuitable" names such as Gaswork Road, Tip House and Coalpit Lane must also be avoided, it said.

Councillors have been advised to adopt and publish the policy, after which new software for street naming will be bought.

The council said maintaining a high standard for naming streets would help emergency services find properties, allow mail to be delivered efficiently and lead to reliable deliveries of goods and services.

Wonder how much more money they've wasted on this?!

999 caller Lewes .

THE ARGUS

Lewes decide not to continue thier plan of not naming streets. A family of 1 and the pet donkey were found huddled together in the bathtub, gently simmering when firecrews were unable to locate the exact location of the house fire for 12 hours, lewes council officials praised the dispatcher for her quick thinking by asking the owner to draw thier curtains,as its feared that it could have been a lot worse if another lewes resident had to witness the event.

Ooh ooh ! , can we have a thread full of funny street names in Sussex ?

I'll start with - DUMB WOMANS LANE, which is situated between Winchelsea & Udimore.

I also like - SLUGWASH LANE - in Haywards Heath.

I was once told by a few locals in Robertsbridge that the top end of Poppinghole Lane is commonly known as SLUTS HOLE. Don't ask me why

I've heard the house numbering in said Lane sometimes includes a letter after a number, and the council honoured a request from the lady at No. 38D to put up a 38DD plaque; in the interests of accuracy you understand.
