Sad - only two left now. No old bones in that group.

The Weight has to be one of the best pop songs ever written

Very sad, I'd hoped Levon had beaten his throat cancer for good. I still have not quite got over the death of Rick Danko, two great voices gone.

I can't recommend highly enough the Scorsese film The Last Waltz, a condensed film of the Band's 1976 4 hour farewell concert. Turn it up.

Newbury, Berkshire.
I only recently purchased a battered ex-rental VHS tape of the 1984 film 'Best Revenge' where Levon stars alongside John Heard and John Rhys-Davies (Gimli the Dwarf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy), and sings on the soundtrack.

Terrible news - I'm going to watch the film tonight in tribute.

The best music/concert film ever. If I had a time machine I'd go back to that gig in an instant. Very sad news.

Sad loss.

Relevant trivia fact.... When he appeared on Desert Island Discs, Tony Robinson chose "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" as his ONE record (out of the eight choices) that he would HAVE to take with him!

And with the Staple Singers thrown in for good measure - Heaven.

I saw a review of the last waltz a few weeks ago in one of the papers - I presume it has been reissued. The reviewer gave it two stars out of five and intimated it was past its sell by date - Callow youth - some things don't date, as I sometimes think when listening to some of the Dance band stuff that my father listened to and loved before and during the war.

I've only got the Last waltz on Video - just might have to order the DVD.

And Bert Weedon has died today as well.

Stagefright - a great tune. Check out Before The Flood, live album of Dylan and the Band from '74 (Rolling Thunder tour, I believe), much underrated live album.

"Acadian Driftwood" is my favourite track by the Band. I always sing along to it, very badly. Love their harmonies. They also did a more than half decent cover of "Atlantic City", one of my favourite Springsteen songs.
