That one party question is loaded as it assumes that there is one correct way to progress, which obviously isn't the case. If there was, and it was apparent a one party state would be a significant advantage, but there isnt so it's a stupid question!

Really?I thought there was only one correct way to progress-the way that you think is right :lolol:

Yep, in a perfect world with perfect leaders.

My thoughts on this is that we have Blair come along and we enter a dubious war in Iraq, Cameron comes along and with the French depose Gaddafi. Then Cameron joins in the warmongering against Assad and supported the rebels against him. The knock on effect is the mass migration that everyone is concerned about.

Our PM’s come and go, and can more cause chaos in the world than any dictator can. It seems to not matter whether one is left or right it’s about moral principle or lack of it with regard to Blair and Cameron.

Between them they have caused more trouble in the world than Putin.

Obviously this isn't binary, you aren't either compassionate with no regard for social order and vice versa, but I think these types of characteristics, which are due to genetics, are distributed along a spectrum.

In addition, IMO, aspects such as agreableness and openness are correlated with someone's political outlook. Those people with higher openness and agreableness would tend to be more 'left wing' than those who would score lower.

In addition I would describe things like nationalism as a social neurosis and not as a particular characteristic or inclination.

Best look at the Political Compass. Open-ness by their scripture correlates with liberalism (implied) but that can be either right wing or left wing. Not an eye opener but are more sophisticated process which I have incorporated in my world view.

I grew up in a single parent family, left school at 16 with THREE o-levels and (after getting chucked out of college) went to work at Amex in 1979.

However, I watched the news, I read papers and books and I talked to people, both left & right. I formed my own view of Britain and the world and I became a socialist.

I believe in equality, that everyone is born equal and whilst some people have the good fortune to be born to richer parents, those born to poor parents shouldn't be significantly disadvantaged because of it; if someone wants to put the effort in to better themselves, either educationally or at work, then they shouldn't be hindered because they are poor.

I believe that certain services, such as gas/electricity/water/transport should be publicly owned and run for the benefit of everyone not shareholders.

I believe that unions are a good thing for protecting workers and making sure they get a fair deal. The right to withdraw labour is a fundamental right and should be protected (I've been on strike and it's not a decision i'd take lightly but I would do it again under the same circumsances).

I believe in people having the freedom to do things that don't harm others so I am pro gay rights, in favour of legalising drugs (and treating addiction as a heath issue rather than a criminal issue).

I don't believe in capital punishment nor do I think prison works but it is sometimes necessary (I have sent people to prison and, in every case, there was no alternative).

I believe in a free-at-the-point-of-use health service which needs to be properly funded and needs to be run by clinicians rather than accountants. If it is necessary to pay more tax to fund it then so be it; as a 40% tax payer I am willing to pay more and I think there should be a 50% rate for those earning more that £100k.

I'd scrap nuclear weapons and better fund our conventional forces; having atom bombs hasn't helped us in Aden, Malaya, Northern Ireland, The Falklands, Iraq or Afghanistan.

I've worked hard all my life, been unemployed for two weeks, and on strike for three, in the last 37 years.

If that makes me a weak, unpatriotic, socialist plonker, then so be it.

From the way you describe yourself and your views, you are peevish, ignorant (lacking knowledge and understanding) and rather unpleasant (gor example, your ludicrous sweeping statements about 'the left').

Personally, owing to changes in circumstances, a wide range of friends, and my life experiences, I neither see myself as left or right. Some friends to the left think I'm quite right wing. Others to the right think I'm a staunch socialist. As a scientist I try to not use 'belief' as a means to make choices. I prefer reasoned argument. I make an attempt to engage with people with whom I disagree, and have had lots of excellent interactions as a consequence. But not if their opening gambit includes masses of judgmental twaddle, followed by a refusal to back down and the old dodge of the mentally lazy: changing the subject.

The old school theory is the uneducated are "RIGHT" and the "LEFT" are the more educated ???
What makes you right or left as this country like many has huge divides!!

Personally I'm a right wing man who had a poor education(tough upbringing)although unlike many lefties I have common sense and knowledge.I would like my country to keep its identity and do not want us to ever lose our independence and sovereignty.I don't want 100's of thousands of migrants coming here every year although I don't have a problem with immigration and I'm certainly not racist as we righters get called regularly:glare:

I find the lefties really annoying and really weak and unpatriotic....I see them as socialist plonkers who do nothing but read about our history and persecute us for being brutal at times in our history.I see these people as not being proud to be British and if anything are anti British and obsessed with culture and human rights and so on.
It's as if they're some kind of GOD that can't be wrong!!
How can a leftie ever be wrong when humanity is being discussed ?
Is it because it's the easy option to be left as you can never be wrong?

Who's to say the world has to be one big happy family?
Who's to say that humans should not kill eachother?
The world a has become to close and countries, cultures, religions were separate for a reason...If there was a god he put all these in place on planet earth for a reason and the biggest mistake in my option is for the world to integrate as it's becoming. For thousands of years humans have killed eachother for many reasons all over the world and that will never change. The animal kingdom is no different as many can never ever live together without killing eachother...that's a different analogy.

You will never get world peace FACT...due to cultures and religious divides...Many do successfully integrate and actually live together, but most are born here and that's all they know.

The gulf between left and right is amazing and it's fascinating to see the paths that lead to your way of thinking wether it's good or bad.

tell that to the Chinese! we may baulk at some of the consequences, but we cannot deny the massive success they have had in the past 30 odd years under a single party system. once they had adopted capitalism of course, because the market really is best :cheery:

I am all for tougher sentencing if I thought it would work and not be unfair on the poorer in society. For instance your point on making £1000 fine for those texting whilst driving. That would work for sure. The rich would possibly pay the fine and never do it again. The poor couldn't afford the fine and would then be jailed for not paying the fine and you would have kids whos mothers and fathers end up in jail because they were poor. Those children then have periods in their lives with no mother or father to keep them on the straight and narrow, possibly then resulting in them following into other crimes.

I don't have a solution. If we did then we could solve all these issues but they are very difficult to solve. So I wouldn't class you as right wing for having that view. Its a good view to have but the practicalities are not so straight forward.

No the poor would be given a repayment programme that would probably be 50p a month and the fine almost 167 years to repay

The difference between left and right wing is purely a question of social conscience.

The left look to extend society outwards, allowing everybody to share the same platform. The right seek to use some of the timbers from the existing platform to build themselves an elevated platform from which they can better control who stands on the platform below.
