I thought at the time that people might be making a bit too much of the Brentford result just because the narrative of Arsenal in dire straights is pure schadenfreude. It felt like a very wonky result. First game of the season. First top flight game in 3 quarters of a century for Brentford. First game with fans back in the stadium for over a year. Brentford newly promoted after so many near misses. Emotionally, Brentford were high as a kite. They would have been difficult for any team on that day.

Of course, the producers at Amazon's All or Nothing must be loving this. Nobody wanted a season full of Arsenal just floating around the top six without ever really pushing for the top spot.

Let's hope it doesn't set the lad's career back too much. His confidence could easiy be shattered. I know he's left us so his form and progress isn't our concern any more, if he flops badly it could put people off buying big from Brighton - and getting our first £50M transfer over the line was a big step towards making our club sustainable.
We don't want to return to the days of, "Who does he play for? Brighton? - £10M should do it then, they'll be grateful!"

I don't think him flopping at Arsenal would impact any bids we get for our players in the future. Do you really think Man Utd will say to themselves "Bissouma looks good, let's tell Brighton we're only offering £20m because Ben White was a flop"? Of course not. The price is determined by a combination of factors; notably what the player is worth to us, and how many clubs want to sign him, and current length of contract. Not "last time they sold a player, he flopped"

Anyway I don't want him to flop because I think he's a good player who performed well for us (including while on loan). So well in fact, that we made fifty million pounds from him. There have only been around 60 player transfers in the history of the sport that have been more valuable:

Tough first three games, then Norwich at home (probably the easiest of PL fixtures). Three points from that and another easy game at Burnley, they'll be rolling

I am sure Arsenal will move up the table as the season goes on. They are a very entitled fan base and think they should be top.

I would suggest 8th is the very highest they could finish. Most likely somewhere between 9 - 13.

West Ham, Leicester, Spurs and Villa - battling for Europe
Everton, Arsenal, Leeds, Wolves and us mid-table

Can you really say with certainty that they are much worse than Spurs whose best player wants to leave and Villa without Grealish and who lost to Watford?

If Spurs sell Kane for £150m they'll have players lined up, one already arrived.
Villa - who knows, spent big and Watford result you could put in the same bracket as Brentford vs Arsenal.

Leeds & Everton could move up a level, as could we if we carry on finishing chances.

That's the excitement isn't it, but I don't think Arsenal have resolved their issues from last season, but others around them have got better.

Arsenal are finding themselves in the same place that Villa, Leeds and Newcastle have found themselves at various points in the last couple of decades. Considering themselves challengers for the top of the table and desperately trying to keep up with the mega spenders, leading to ever-increasing panic buys, managerial changes and ultimately for each of them, relegation.

What teams like that need is a sensible rebuild, but the fans get so impatient it's almost not allowed, so it almost requires a relegation to get them to do that - but that also means they permanently lose touch with the other big sides.

Arsenal are finding themselves here, the owners wanting to do the rebuild, invest in youth - but the impatience of the fans will lead to shredding managers and not cashing in on the biggest assets like Aubameyang, Leno and Xhaka who won't be around when the next great Arsenal team is produced. So they keep spending money on the likes of Willian whilst clinging to hopes of top 4, then top 6, then a cup run, whilst not giving game time to the younger players and ultimately losing them like Martin ex and Willock, maybe Nketiah, Smith-Rowe, Maitland-Niles too.

Developed well, White, Saka, Tierney, Odegaard, Smith-Rowe and some of these others could be the core of the next top Arsenal team, and Arteta could be the coach if allowed to develop himself, if only there was a plan and an acceptance of this plan by the fanbase. Yet as we can see from the totally over the top reaction to an illness-ravaged squad losing to an inspired Brentford and then the European champions, the fans are a long long way from being on the same page.

I kind of laugh at them, but I more despair at the way the obvious way forward is not being accepted.
