Asked on Friday morning for clarification of his remarks about America’s need to “strengthen and expand” its nuclear weapons, President-elect Donald Trump said: “Let it be an arms race.”

Trump spoke by phone to MSNBC Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski, who reported the conversation with co-host Joe Scarborough. Both spoke while wearing pyjamas and slippers and sitting in front of a roaring fire.

On Thursday, Trump used Twitter to say the US “must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes”.

As well as the opaque meaning of the remark, subsequent debate centered on whether it was prompted by similar words from Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Putin said the same day: “We need to strengthen the military potential of strategic nuclear forces, especially with missile complexes that can reliably penetrate any existing and prospective missile defence systems.”

I am worried now

Is anybody surprised at this?

In the same way that "Brexit" meant Brexit it's clear "Let's Make America Great Again" means "Let's Tool Up and Kick Some Foreign Butt".

What did they think Trump would do - spend 4 years pressing flowers and baking cakes?

We know the winner of the previous Arms Race and that was when the Soviet Union was a lot bigger.

What does the Russian economy have except hydrocarbons, I can't remember the last time I saw anyone driving a Russian Car or using a Russian Laptop?

America will win any economic (which is what Arms Races boil down to) race with Russia; China on the other hand...

At least America has realised it can do some thing really well, and has embraced that.

Ok sure making and selling all manner of weapons might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it's a living.

Think I saw think on the BBC website the other day that the current strength is Russia 7,200 nuclear warheads vs. Amerika's 7,000. Like the actual numbers matter.

Trump's usual considered, thoughtful tweet was responding to Putin's “We need to strengthen the military potential of strategic nuclear forces, especially with missile complexes that can reliably penetrate any existing and prospective missile defence systems.” comment.

As the OP suggests having these two individuals fingers near the nuke launch button is a tad worrying.

They're supposed to be new best mates tho eh? Putin is the more sly and manipulative by far., and patently has a far bigger game plan. Outfoxes The Wally With The Lolly on every front.
