Sad indeed.

As a kid and adult, I was never into horse racing and have never seen a race in my life. However LP was a name I knew very well because of his outstanding success and career as a jockey. He was a legend in the true sense of the word, not in the modern over-used definition.

During a career lasting almost 50 years he rode nearly four and-a-half thousand winners.

Says it all.

RIP.

No one will ever top his success, 9 Derby wins and 30 Classic wins starting from a 14 year old. A true character from the past. RIP

True sporting legend.

Unfortunately took the ‘tax evasion’ rap when most of the higher echelons of Flat Racing were also at it, ultimately cost him his deserved Knighthood.

He used to get some stick though for easing up when he knew he couldn’t win……. Upset the E/W punters all the time.

Couple of years ago he was there when the Queen unveiled a statue of him at Epsom.
That's something at least.
