Very versatile actor. As well as the comedy roles and catchphrases he will be remembered for he more than held his own in more serious roles in films like Empire of the Sun, and some very good minor roles like Tomb Raider

He could do Shakespeare too. I saw him play Falstaff about 30 years and he was very good.

I think I'll always associate him with The Navy Lark - something that brightened up those gloomy 60s Sundays.

RIP - I was only talking about him recently as a colleague from Greece asked what Ding Dong meant I then had to try and explain all about Leslie Phillips. Thankfully YouTube made it much easier.
