Mindless!
18th May 2004

DAVID DUKE has launched a blistering attack on Brighton striker Leon Knight after learning that the striker’s ‘needless’ challenge has scuppered his chances of playing in Thursday’s crucial play-off clash at the Withdean Stadium.

The only shred of consolation for the Scotsman is that X-rays have revealed his damaged right ankle isn’t broken.

Duke was left in agony on Sunday after the Seagulls’ diminutive forward clattered into him on the left touchline just before the interval.

The 25-year-old’s ankle took the full force of the late challenge and he immediately feared the worst.

He said: “My first thought was that it was broken. I was in a lot of pain.

“I was gutted, distraught and very, very angry. I still am to be honest.

“I thought I’d been doing okay and their midfield wasn’t really frightening us in any way.

“ I tried to carry on at the start of the second half but it was no good.

“ I couldn’t run or jump so I had to come off.”

The damaged ankle has been examined, both inside and out, and although there is no break, the bruising and swelling means Duke has absolutely no chance of making the second leg.

He said: “The reason I’m so annoyed with him (Knight) is that there was no need for the challenge.

“I had tracked back, got to the ball first and then he’s come right through the back of me.

“It was totally needless. I am not happy with him at all. He should have been sent off.”

Duke is under strict orders not to put any weight on the ankle for at least 48 hours and his role at Brighton on Thursday will be that of a spectator.

Despite his personal anger, frustration and disappointment, Duke is confident his colleagues can see off the Seagulls and progress to the Millennium Stadium.

He said: “We have won convincingly away from home on several occasions this season, and there’s no reason why we can’t do it again.

“Brighton are the ones under pressure while we’ve got nothing to lose.”

Duke’s absence leaves manager Andy King with an unwanted selection headache.

However, Grant Smith earned praise for his contribution on Sunday, having replaced Duke, and could be rewarded with a start at Brighton, the club famously associated with his father.

Not so much a case of ‘and Smith must score’ as ‘Smith might start’.

Fewer than 80 tickets remain for Thursday’s play-off semi-final second leg at Brighton.

Any tickets remaining at close of business today will go on general sale to supporters at 9am tomorrow.

that was a GREAT challenge, no-where near the ball and cleanly took the inbred out...marvelous

made me laugh when they started sining "who are ya?" at him and the cool little Knight just pointed to his name...then (insert bighead pic) I stared the "Top scorer la la la" chant and they all shut up....even more marvelous :lolol:

.

I keep hearing this line from Swindon. Being 1-0 down and needing to win 2-0 away from home sounds like more pressure than being 1-0 up at home to me. Not saying they can't do it but who are they kidding about the pressure???

It's a shame the guy got hurt, but leon's challenge was hardly a leg-breaker. Deserved a booking but the type of thing you see all the time.

In a weird way The In-breds are putting pressure on themselves by claiming to be underdogs. Everybody in Swindon is now expecting them to come out, totally relaxed in an underdog kind of way, and consequently steamroller all over us.

They should take a leaf out of The Albion's book-say nothing that might give a lift to the other team.

Have to admit I was quite pissed off when he made that challenge, was in a pointless area of the field and didnt need to do it. Thought Duke milked it a fair bit but I was praying he didnt score afterwards as the ref didnt appear to be Leon's biggest fan and could well have booked him for his usual exuberant celebration leaving us right in the shit.

Well it won't be unless he gets his arse in gear and gets a tiket

I have it on good authority that the Manager and players are not very happy at all about Swindon's reaction to the manner of our victory, and it is just galvanising us to ensure we finish the job on Thursday.

If you were to ask the question 'we've got one game left, all we need to do is draw at home to Swindon. Can we do it?', you'd be hard pushed to find anybody that would say we are unlikely to do it. I'm touching every single peice of wood I can find here, but given how we have been at home this season, would anybody bet against us?

I also think the sub Smith was better than Duke, so that won't be any detriment to them.

Why is it that teams always get BITCHY about their allocation and when the play offs come round a team cannot fill their end even though it is a 2 1/2 hour drive away at the most. Tossers.

Whiny BITCHES can go f*** emselves.

Oh yeah, Duke? You can f*** OFF and all.

Swindon strike me as a clueless tin-pot rabble managed by a puffing gypsy whereas Albion have looked utterly professional by contrast.

My suggestion to some of Swindon's better players is that they take a good look at the classy Albion set-up (facilities not withstanding) and learn - because if you're lucky, we might be need to bolster our squad next season. Sam Parkin, please step forward.

Amazing moaning and whinging on an almost olympian scale. It's only half-time FFS! Have they done any training this week or are they spending their time at annual Swindon Life's Not Fair Convention.

If I were them I would be moaning at Mooney for missing a sitter from the ONLY clear chance they had all game.

And they still haven't sold all their tickets, unbelievable!

Perhaps the reason the tickets weren't snapped up quicker is because they were only available to season ticket holders with a certain patron code, and only one per person. From what I've heard they've all sold out today BEFORE they were due to go on general sale tomorrow. Oh, and no one's mentioned the 100 or so spare seats in the Brighton end on Sunday - pathetic!

One clear shot? So hitting the bar twice doesn't count?

I can't believe Swindon haven't sold their end out. I saw one fan on another website moaning about how few tickets they have been allocated because they could have taken 10,000 here. Shows what he knows.

Spare seat? I don't think so. The only spare seats were because everyone was bunched up and standing in the middle.

Fool.

I used to think the 'inbred' thing was a cruel joke... this sort of post only goes to show it is unfortunately rather accurate!!

The only 'spare' seats in the Brighton end on Saturday were beacuse people were standing, especially on the bit of open terrace behind the goal. We sold all of our allocated tickets, by post, and most of them before we knew if it was Hartlepool on a Thursday night or Swinedon on the weekend.

Hitting the bar has never counted as a 'shot on target'! Do you guys AIM for the bar ?? No, I don't think so. You only had ONE SHOT ON TARGET and that was a lame effort from the edge of the box.
