Who will be supporting the industrial action on Tuesday?

edit: misleading thread title... the one day strike is Tuesday March 7th - the more significant assessment boycott begins on March 8th

I work in local goverment and we are currently having a ballot about action over our pensions. I for one will be there on the front line fighting for what i was promissed. Do not get me wrong I know that from the outside our pensions may look good, but when you look at the fact that we have suffered lower then industry standard wages for years because of our so called good pension, you can start to understand why we are upset.

It is a bit of a wimps strike, isn't it!? They are making sure the students don't miss out. Commendable but daft.

sorry for the misleading title...!!! not wimpish at all in fact... management are threatening/promising to withold pay and there is a real feeling of "now or never" if a decent pay award (that even partially addresses the comparative reduction in recent years) is to be achieved

Good on them. It is very important.

My lecturers were all lining their pockets with their own property/surveying firms etc. I hope they join in as well...

Damn right. I am also a local gov. type. Pensions are deferred wages and if the employers tries to muck around with them they are effectively stealing from my salary (and I am a HR Manager, too !)

I've been told to. The VC sent round a (strongly worded) letter the other day which almos made me want to support the action but it's not our dispute, the Uni has 5 months to negotiate this particular pay rise and we're all getting in NO MATTER WHAT. This strike action is pretty pointless.

mmmm..... good idea to wait for 5 months while the university management agree their budgets for next year before pursuing a pay claim...?

I think the only reason they are asking for this hike (it's quite a large raise that most are holding out for including a 2 grand 'good will gesture'. Bascially we all move over on to the new pay scale in Augest whatever happens. It just seems a bit pointless.

They did it 2 years ago, they still mark essays etc... but students just dont recieve the marks back until the strike is over! I say they should do it, they dont get paid enough anyway, no professional academics get paid enough. Our country is built on these people!!

Are you taking the piss? Academic staff earn a f*** load and pretty much take summers off. We don't see a lot of them for WEEKS in the summer.

Some did ... I didn't, nor did anyone else I know.

Thanks for the support, by the way!

(although I've now taken a job outside the sector, I still feel close to it, and my partner is on the AUT exec at our local uni)
