To be honest I'm not that upset about our exit. However losing half our midfield, and having our fears about the reserve keeper and back up forwards confirmed was a lot more worrying.

I personally think it's all about the league this year, an early exit from the paint pot wouldn't upset me either. A nice little morale boosting run in the FA Cup would be nice though.

Always hate going out of the league cup, more so than the fa cup to be honest, affection goes back to our run in the 70's beating saff end, ipswich, west brum and the final two games against derby, watched all 7 games, happy days, under floodlights made it even more special???

Remember them well....great atmosphere....The Goldstone Ground at its best;happy days!

I agree, but like the Rev I have very fond memories of that glorious League Cup run back in the 1970s (plus an earlier one when we lost to Wolves) and I know exactly where he's coming from. If Falmer can generate a quarter of the atmosphere of those games it will be brilliant.

Concentrate on the League, seeing as several Championship sides as well as League one sides lost to League Two teams the result is not that important (Charlton threw away a 3-0 lead). The injury and the sending off are very much more of a concern, also, looks like Gus was right (in the end) about Poke.

I have no memories of any glorious League Cup runs, it is normal for us to exit in the first round isn't it?

Agreed. Not at all worried by this exit. The only cup that matters is the FA Cup and anything that distracts from the serious business of getting out of tis division the right way can be jettisoned.

Looking at other results from last night it makes one wonder if teams from higher divisions take this competition seriously. I don't believe in fielding an understrength team especially when in our case we have a new group of players and games like these can be used for gelling. We can not complain about going out of this competition when we field a team of fringe players

I have great memories of the visits to The Baseball ground and The Hawthorns etc so was hoping for a mini run in this cup. I believe that winning breeds more wins and a win last night would have kept us going which would benegfit us in in our chase for promotion.

I was more concerened about the manner in which we went out. Surely Gus & Co must have realised that they would try, but hopefully not succeed, in kicking us off the park, but they did and it also showed as I have said all along that our first XI is quite good but the back up is very poor. I think that Gus estimate of 3 or 4 squad players is about right but they must be squad players who will put pressure on the players in possession like Dicker does, not just to make up the numbers as per some of our players last night.

Anything other than the league is nothing more than a disctraction for me personally. Gutted we've lost two of our top players for a competition thats of no consequence

The league cup is unfair to lesser teams due to the seeding system.

First round is always bottom of League 1 + 2 against better teams. Second round, if you get through, you will always be drawn against a higher placed team.

Would be fairer if the weaker teams were always drawn at home in the first two rounds to make it more interesting.

I think a full weeks normal training schedule is much more important to our final goal than getting into the next round of the cup. The ONLY thing that matters this season is getting promotion and starting at Falmer in the Championship. I fully expect us to exit the Paint Trophy and FA Cup at the first hurdle too.

Like some others have mentioned, I am used to an early exit in this cup, so not surprised or disappointed. But, i do think a winning run is good for team confidence and morale, so to field a weakend side this early in the season is a bit odd. Although, Mr Poyet knows the players better than me, so he can do what he likes!

Not the end of the world by any means.

But I wonder how many people on here saying it is almost a good thing getting knocked out would have happily missed out on the Manchester City match...

I can't believe some of the rubbish on here. To win the league or even just get promoted, you need a winnng mentality so why is it good to go out of what is a good competition for clubs of our level. Our two best runs in the competition coincided with promotion runs in 76/77 and 78/79. The competition that is worth diddly squat is the jpt so lets get out of that one.

The first team need a winning mentality. We didn't play our first team. We'll get our winning mentality in the league!
