LDC Direct Debit protest

Much comment regarding non payment of council tax to LDC and potential ramifications for individuals.

What about a direct debit campaign. Nominate a date - everyone who lives within the LDC area and wishes to make a protest simply cancels their direct debit on that date.

LDC would have to write to each individual requesting that the reinstate dd. If enough do this it would be a major admin headache. Once payment requested simply set up dd again. No one gets any grief for non payment.

With the right press this would send a strong message to LDC and cause logistic problems and admin nightmare.

The direct debit arrangements that apply in Lewes District provide for payments to be made over TEN months (from April to January inclusive).

Cancelling a direct debit after the December payment would only leave them to make alternative arrangements to collect the January payment.

They'd be put through a lot of trouble, for such a little reward.

You might even choose to make the January payment by cheque.

I don't know whether they chase late payments with reminder letters. I guess that could be a real hassle for them.

Can you make a cash settlement to the Council cashiers. I believe a traditional form of protest is then to pay in pennies. Go to bank order amount in smallest currency possible, unbag the whole load, put in large sack and present it for payment.

There is a limit I believe where small change (ie coppers) no longer becomes legal tender and can be refused.

I remember reading somewhere that the maximum amount that anyone has to accept payment in coppers is 15p.

Probably brought in to combat that very reason.
