Think you're reading too much into this one Easy. Don't think Lawrenson hates Pearce at all. They just enjoy a good, entertaining banter. It's all in stark contrast to ITV's match coverage, which no matter how hard it tries, just cannot get it right. Jim Beglin anyone? Christ Alive, is he the best they can do? He is dull, never gives any analysis of the game and has no sense of humour. Just can't understand why he's still there.

And I'd say that also applies to Mark Bright, the MASTER of stating the absolutely bleedin' obvious. I'd get more insight into the game listening to a marble in a washing machine.

He's honest and straight to the point. He doesn't endlessly bumlick the English players all the time like Shearer does. I remember when Shearer and Hansen were constantly pussyfooting around the whole Gerrard-Lampard issue, when the whole nation KNEW the two of them couldn't play together. They still wouldn't stick their necks out and admit that one of them had to be dropped. Shearer with all his "I believe great players can play together" bullshit and Hansen's non-commital "well the manager's gottee make a decision" nonsense.

Lawro, on the other hand - when asked by Motson how he would fit Lampard back into the England team when he returned from injury - just said "I wouldn't. I wouldn't play him, I'd put him on the bench." Its sad to say, but that kind of honesty is almost completely non-existent on the BBC's football coverage. Lawrenson's sarcasm and caustic nature is a breath of fresh air - it cuts beautifully through the insufferable pomposity of Jonathan Pearce's commentary, and is far more preferable to Linekar, Hansen and Shearer's endless appeasement of their golf buddies in the England team. Give me Lawro over the arse-lickers any day.

I can't stand any of them much. Peacock comes out with some vaguely insightful comments but thats about it. I really like Chris Waddle on five live (I normally ditch Motson whenever he is commentating*) who more than most can read a game and where each teams weakness is. Trouble is, you then get Alan Green. I'm sure Green would find something to moan about if he was commentating surrounded by free beer, watching the 22 best footballers in the world whilst being noshed off by a selection of hookers.

Lawro was on Chris Moyles the other morning I have only just realised that they kept making comments to this effect..... "Lawro are you sharing a room with Pearce" "Lawro have you seen Pearce yet" etc.... didn't really think anything of it at the time but it all makes sense now!

BTW he was still completely mullered from the night before - sounded quite funny!

Shearer is a smug waste of air time. Hansen is getting far too self-important, and the whole BBC set up (including Lineker, king of the excruciatingly forced pun) reeks of the golf club in-clique having a few jars at the nineteenth hole.

ITV are somehow worse, with the charisma-free Steve Rider, and Andy Townsend, who somehow manages to take a whole bunch of technology and leave you with less insight into the game than you had before.

The best pundits are the ones who make the least noise about themselves. Adrian Chiles, goes without saying, I quite like what Gavin Peacock has to say on MOTD2, and Lee Dixon is tolerable.

Somewhat surprisingly, one of the best summarisers I've heard is Stan Collymore on Five Live. Considering his background, he has an excellent knowledge of lower league football, and actually offers interesting input into the game, rather than wittering on like a lot of them do.
