He hasn't looked all that well in recent years. As someone who exchanged him some coins for the 'ciggy machine' in the Royal Pavillion Tavern in 1979, I hope it all hasn't caught up with him

Also should be noted - 39 caps for the Republic of Ireland, including scoring the goal against Scotland that ultimately led to Ireland qualifying for its first major championship finals (which he never played in because of injury).

Always looked like he didn't want to be there when he was in the studio, and worse, during co-comms when he used to sound actively annoyed at having to attend the match. Hard to believe that the curmudgeon act was just that.
That said, he's a fixture of football's past so deserves a good send off.

Well I seem to be in a minority here in thinking he’ll be missed. I liked him as a pundit, I don’t think pundits should be starry eyed or overly enthusiastic if what they’re seeing doesn’t merit it.
I’d have still had him on MOTD if it were my call. Fair play to him, hope he enjoys his retirement.

I worked on the show (and MOTD) with Lawro and he is an absolute gent of a man, who'd do anything to help others.
And the 'he hates albion' thing, is all BS.
I think he called time on MotD at the right time to be honest. I always liked him and I found his slightly exhausted approach to punditry quite funny. By all accounts he seemed a decent man too.
I've never got the "anti-Brighton" thing. The VAST majority of his success as a player came at Liverpool and, guess what, the media are more interested in his Liverpool days that his Brighton ones. What sticks with me though was when we were promoted to the PL he did come out and talk very fondly about the club and has always wished us well.
Hope he enjoys his retirement
