My laptop gets rather HOT on the left hand side where, I assume is the fan. Is there anyway that i can stop this from getting so hot as i am afraid that this could bugger the laptop up.

Unplug and switch off before you are left with a puddle of plastic on your table:dunce:

My laptop has shut it's self off when the fan part has got very hot so i wouldn't worry too much. It's obviously best not to let it over heat but you shouldn't get any problems from it.

Check the manufacturers website for any product recalls. There have been issues wher laptops have overheated and they have recalled batteries etc.

Someone on here once mentioned a USB fan. I haven't seen one of them, and i know it's not convenient, but sticking a fan behind the laptop does the trick

Woodchip is right.

Although it is called a laptop you should never use it on your lap.

My laptop use to cut out all the time then i read the instruction book,"always use on a hard firm surface" because the air flow will be restricted otherwise.

Laptops are for girls!!

We have had this issue3 with BAGs lap top which is a Toshiba.

If you get hold of them cotton bud things, gently ( and I mean gently) insert one onto the fan air ducts on the side of your machine and see how much dust you can collect.

You will find that overheating is caused by many things, but dust clogging up the fan is a major cause.

If you are competant and your machine is out of warranty, remove the keyboard section which should give you access to the processor chip and fan, you can clean from there too.

Its all about housekeeping. We have over 2000 Lap tops in the business and making sure the ducts are clear means we have not had one failure out of this batch yet.

Your local Chemist must do a roaring trade from you or do you use the used cotton buds from the bathroom bin!!
