My eldest lad starts Uni next week and the course he is on (Business Studies and Economics) stipulate that he has a Laptop. Any ideas for a reliable mid price Laptop? Ability to play games or solve 89th order differential equations not a pre-requisite.

they are Dell - so are reliable.

Especially if you want to keep the winter chills out with the nice, free open fire they provide !

Out of 3 computers in my house at the moment, 1 is not working. It is the only one that is a Dell and is not the oldest or most used by a very long way!

Reliable my @rse!

at home
we had over 100, 000 dell pc's and have somewhere in the region of 1,350 Dell laptops.

We had hardly any problem with the dells.

6 Months ago, we changed to HP's and are having no end of problems.

There again we may just have been unlucky and lucky that all Dells are shite seemly:rolleyes:

My old firm had HP machines and they seemed ok, to be honest.

The only experience of Dell I have is the non-working one at home, so I guess I've just been unlucky.

Dell wouldn't sell computers to a previous firm of mine as their database couldn't cope with two customers with the same postcode. I hope they've sorted that little issue out by now!

In my computer
Laptops are like cars - 50 good ones and then 1 right horrible stinker... cuold be a Dell could be a HP - who knows.... you pays your money you takes your chance...

Personally I'm a Sony gal - all the way - but that makes it bloody expensive... at least that way everything in my house can talk to each other merrily (even when I'm not home)...

Anyhow - this place is good for HP Acer etc - although its hard to compare with laptops as so many companys have laptops "specially" made for them and offer "sale prices" but when you go to do your homework you'll find that you can't compare prices as the spec is different for every laptop....

Red Cracker

I bought my Sony VAIO desktop from Dabs and they've been fantastic with support and free software etc...

and theres always the Dell site - although I'm not a fan myself...

and PS - don't spend too much money - you know the little blighter will leave it on the front seat of the car and it'll get stolen or he'll forget it on the train.....so you'll be forking out for a new onw in six months anyhow... ;)

Both the HP I have for work, and the Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo I have at home have run problem free (touch wood).

The latter does seem to run a bit warm though.

In fact, I seem to be lucky with any PC / laptop I've had. Probably because I don't try and overclock, download dodgy software etc...

Exactly right - anyone who comes out with the "all <insert brand name here> are crap" are just talking shite.

The fact is most PCs and laptops are put together by taking components made by quite a small set of manufacturers and stuffing them in a case.

David, I am working currently as part of a team that is doing the biggest roll out of its kind. 93,000 PCs in total. We are replacing Dells (which are badly made and flakey software wise) with HP (really a Compaq) which are both reliable and solidily built. Not my opinion but that of the country's largest bank.

Could be you .....

I'd agree. We turfed upwards of 2000 Dell's in favour of HP compaq.

It's not that the machines were poor, it was the support. HP Compaq have always been first class with regard to any problems - which are few and far between.

For a laptop though - Acer do an excellent value range. If it's to remain plugged in, Celeron processors are worth considering.

With support I have to say that HP have Dell over a barrel no question. Dell used to be good value but these days they've tried to be the cheapest and not the best. HPs are solidly built and I would rate them over a Tosh too.

However, try having a peek on Ebay as well. Dells are okay until they go wrong. getting them fixed is a bit tricky, especially if they have a warranty.
