I rented a Peugeot 308 in France last year and did over 1,000 km in it. By a distance the worst thing about that car, which otherwise I enjoyed driving, was its lane assist feature that I had to turn off every time I got into the car, the default setting (which I guess could have been changed somewhere) was to have it turned on. It felt like someone else was driving instead of me, like one of those dreams you get that has a hidden meaning to it!There's a massive variation in how intrusive the systems are in different cars/brands, which doesn't help its appeal. I'll often 'use' it in different cars when I simply can't be arsed to turn it off every time I get in.
As far as driver assistance systems go, it's nowhere near the most annoying.
No, you can't normally.I rented a Peugeot 308 in France last year and did over 1,000 km in it. If they invented a system in which your car said to you, "put your phone down you twat" or even better, locked it when you pick it up when you're behind the wheel, i'd get behind itAlso gives you a concentration report (Hyundai Ionic) bit like my school report "Can do Better".....
Why would you not indicate when you change lanes after overtaking on a motorway? Any lane change should be signalled.I encountered this on a hire car in Spain. Unless you indicated both ways on the motorway it would object whenever I tried to pull back in after overtaking. That was a bit annoying, but other than that I thought it was an ok feature and hardly noticeable 99% of the time.
Those "mundane tasks" are generally what keeps you alert behind the wheel. Building in these additional auto features make it all the more likely the driver will semi-switch off to let the car take care of things, IMO.What a silly comment, cars have evolved to do all the mundane tasks we used to have to endure to make journeys easier and safer
Tremendous. Great advert for this feature.I put it on if I feeling particularly tired, makes sense really.
This is a valid point. I was reading something recently about why the standard of driving is so much worse in North America than Europe. A lot of it is because the vast majority of NA drivers use automatics, so they don't give much thought to the actual process of driving. Those "mundane tasks" are generally what keeps you alert behind the wheel. Building in these additional auto features make it all the more likely the driver will semi-switch off to let the car take care of things, IMO.
I can safely say that if my car had the lane assist feature, it would never be used. I'll take care of the steering, thanks.
A lot of it is required to meet new NCAP safety requirements. Loads of the manufacturers can't stand them!I just think it's one of those things where car designers are spending loads of time and money on R&D to achieve something which might initially sound good, but is pointless and in most cases annoying.
More focus on fuel efficiency (and don't fabricate the results this time) would actually make a difference. Lighter batteries on EV's Or just making a car cheaper. This arms race to make cars ever more computerised is my my view, expensive folly.
EXACTLY the same sensation for me when me and a few mates rented a car in France. Just like someone else is driving.I rented a Peugeot 308 in France last year and did over 1,000 km in it.... It felt like someone else was driving instead of me, like one of those dreams you get that has a hidden meaning to it!
If you indicate before changing lanes, it’s not activated.
I think there is some truth to this, but the steering correction is really not intrusive (on my VW Tiguain, or previous VW Passat, at least) and if you ARE alert and driving more or less in the centre of your lane, then you wouldn't even know the feature was there. Those "mundane tasks" are generally what keeps you alert behind the wheel. Building in these additional auto features make it all the more likely the driver will semi-switch off to let the car take care of things, IMO.
