Yesterday's by-election result overturned a Green majority of 900.

Emma Daniel (Labour Party): 1,396
David Gibson (Green Party): 1,358
Robert Knight (Conservative Party): 275
Patricia Mountain (Ukip) 250
Phil Clarke (Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts): 172
Lev Eakins (Liberal Democrats): 56


And Emma Daniel will be an excellent councillor.

After the Green loss the most satisfying bit is seeing the Lib Dems so far behind.

I liked the rubbish the Tory councillor said about ther result showing Brighton was turning it's back on Labour and the Greens.

Despite them having 500-600% of the Tory vote each.

Here in Hanover/Elm Grove we've had loads of electioneering recently from all parties - the most I've seen in nearly 20 years living here. And whilst I'd say there's a sizeable backlash against Greens - you'll have to take into account the student population who have mostly gone home for the summer. I think that has had a significant effect.

I may, for reasons of no longer living in Brighton, be less invested in this than I once was, but if this is a sign that the novelty of voting Green is starting to wear off then that's not a moment too soon.

Still think it's a typical mid-term protest vote rather than a definite sign that the Greens are joining the BNP (and the Lib-Dems) as a protest party that discovers that opposition is easier than government. Turnout was only about 30% as well so most people clearly don't give a toss one way or the other.

Wrong. In fact the Green candidate in the Argus was using the absence of the student vote as one of his main excuses.

As with most things, you've got that spot on. In fact I reckon poor old Caroline Jackson will lose her seat thanks to the debacle of the Greens in power here. I'll never vote Green (probably never vote again) but she's a damn good constituency MP. Her intervention with preventing the Tesco Express or whatever they're called opposite the Franklin was a fantastic result.


By the way - talking of Hanover/Elm Grove - it's Patchfest tomorrow. Free family-oriented local festival that goes from strength to strength.

Yeah, last year was brilliant despite the rain, shame the Fish Brothers aren't playing again. We're actually moving my mum into an old people's home at the weekend (well, 'sheltered accommodation'), but providing we've managed to get the old bird settled in I'll probably pop along to see Tragic.

I work as a Presiding Officer in Eastbourne and it is fair to say that there are a lot of students who vote.

That's a big assumption that they all would have voted Green if they were about! Sounds like he's trying to deflect attention away from the fact that people are turning their backs on them.
