Anyone see Kurt Vile's gig last night in Brighton? I'm watching him at Koko in Camden tonight and wondered wht his performance last night was like. Any reviews would be welcome.

I saw him last night. It's probably best that I say I'm not a huge fan of his, I find his music a little underwhelming and his voice is not my liking. Live he seemed a bit amateurist/rusty. He played for 90 mins and I must admit my mind did wander a little towards the end. 90 mins of his music makes you realise he is very one paced and samey. But, I did enjoy it and was happy to have seen him.

That said, my wife who is a big fan loved it as did seemingly most people in the audience who were utterly silent throughout (see my thread about chatting at gigs ). He also did a cover, and it is one of my favourite songs so that was cool-I will not spoilt it for you.

What did you think then?

PS a friend of a friend who went to the Brighton gig described him as 'spellbinding.'

Was just about to reply on this funnily enough and just seen this. You were pretty spot on. He was brilliant for about 45 minutes (really making some of the songs sound even better than the album) but then he just semed to get a bit self-absorbed and bogged down and like you, our minds wandered a bit. Came back with a good encore. But what was the cover he played when you saw him out of interest? We think the last track was a cover but didn't know what it was.

He performed Downbound Train by Springsteen mid-set. It really suited his style and it is one of my favourite Boss tracks. I also think he played another cover towards the end; I did not know it but I could feel it was not one of his. I agree, some of the songs he performed were better than the album. There was a particular simple track, title escapes me, where there was a swirling echoey keyboard. The keyboard is there on the album but very very low in the mix. Live it's in the foreground and in my opinion really enhanced the track.

As I say, overall I did enjoy it and felt better for having gone-seems like you did as well.

The only really simple track he did off the new album was Peeping Tomboy which was everybit as f***ing amazing as I thought it would be live. Not sure about the cover. Wasn't springsteen though. (That's a new album to look forward to though isn't it!)

But yeah, glad I went. However lots of people talked throughout the gig!

And well done to the others on the Kurt Weill/Threepenny Opera refs. Apparently "Kurt vile" is his real name and his mum had never heard of Kurt Weill when she named him.

I was pleasantly surprised that The Haunt was silent for this gig. This is one topic which really annoys me-see my specific thread about ‘chatting at gigs.’

I saw Apparat at the same venue and they cut their set short because of the talking. Grrrrrrr.

Yeah - saw your original thread. Annoys me too and was particularly bad last night. One couple had a bit of a "domestic" early on and some were very very pissed, but the highlight of disinterestedness in the gig was three guys watching the dying minutes of Chelsea Napoli on their I phones.

Jesus. There is a review in today's Guardian which mentions his lighter moments were drowned out by crowd-chatter. It makes going to see certain bands/acts almost impossible these days. The article also says he covered Spacemen 3's Hey Man. I don't know this song.

Saw him at the Hope last year and thought he was pretty good. He played a couple without the band that I prefered. He sold the Haunt out didn't he?

Yup, sold out well in advance of the night.

Dammit! Opened this thread assuming Kurt Vile was one of those random player that somebody thought we should be signing. Quite fancied having VILE on the back of my shirt. Oh well.

My mate did a bit of digging. The last track, that we didn't know was the Spacemen 3 song, He was supported by Sonic Boom on the night, band formed by Pete Kember from Spacemen 3, so that explains that one. But according to setlist.com, the sixth track he played was Downbound Train. Didn't know the song myself (thought it must be a Kurt Vile I didn't know at the time), but having seen the setlist, now recall it from the night and it was bloody brilliant. It was about the same time the couple were having their domestic!

The crowd chatter was really bad, plus the amount of people holding up their f***ing phones and filming bits.

Bit late to this thread, but I thought I'd update it by asking if anyone is doing the double bill and seeing Vile's former band The War on Drugs at Concorde 2 on Wednesday. Really like their new album and really looking forward to it.

As for Vile, I really enjoyed the gig (and was impressed at the lack of twats around me). Agree that he can seem quite amateur and wandering during his set, but I think that's part of the charm - he obviously has a huge catalogue of songs and could play for hours, and you can tell he's generally a bit of a stoner who just loves playing the guitar - it almost makes the success of Smoke Ring for My Halo a happy accident. The highlight was, of course, the Springsteen cover - I love Vile's version but it's amazing how you can instantly tell a song that is written by a true great.

I saw War On Drugs also at The Haunt a while back. Slave Ambient was one of my favourite albums of last year and live they didn't disappoint.
