Got a knock at the door last night at 11.30pm, I thought this is a bit strange, so popped on my steel toecap shoes before answering the dooor. Stood on my path was a youngish man in cargo shorts and a t-shirt who proceeded to ask my for £3 as he had £10 so he could get back to Clapham common......

Dirty northern monkey ???

I told him sorry, it aint right knocking on peoples doors and shut the door. The wife and little one were fast asleep upstairs and we have a few elderly people on the road and one next door. So I called the Old Bill.

However what the feck, we live up the top of Hartington Road no where near the station.

Sussing the place out maybe !

Or just desperate either by doing something he should not have or been kicked out !

Anyone else had the same ?
That's worrying, as I live near you. I wonder what he would have said if you called his bluff and offered to buy the ticket on line if he gave you the ten pounds, incidentally even with a rail card £3 would not have been enough to Clapham.

I think what they are saying, is that if you got a knock on your door at 2 in the afternoon asking for petrol...would you phone the police thinking its dodgy?

Yeah this, i'm home quite a lot and so know buglars like to scout houses. If someone knocks on my house at 1pm (common burglary time) and ask for a few quid is that suspicious enough to waste the polices time?

Yeah, but yeah......

I called the brighton polce station and reported not 999 if its logged then if there is an incident later or even happend earlier. Theres my call with discription and times I dont see what I did wrong.

i had a guy knock on my door about 1130pm saying he had just put petrol in his car but realised he didnt have enough money and could he have £3 to help him out,it didnt feel right as i knew the garage he was talking about was closed.i sent him away empty handed.
a while later there was something in the paper about a man who had been targeting homes in my area with this same story,he was well known to the Police and not a nice chap by all accounts.

Why always £3? That seems very odd.

Of course it is: the great majority of burglaries happen during daylight hours.

If someone done the same to me would you recommend calling the police? How about if the story was a little more believable and it was 1pm?

How far does it have to go before you think "this is a bit dodgy", just use intuition?

These days every other person at your door is trying to scam/knife you.

My recommendation would be to call the police as soon as the doorbell rings, and have them answer it. Just to be on the safe side.

This sounds like an old fashioned scam to me. I've seen it before when someone goes down an entire road saying the same sob story. Not heard of it for a while though.

I just had a similar thing happen to me. A guy knocked at the door saying he does jetwashing of driveways. I sent him on his way. He then proceeded to knock on a neighbours door. He turned round and saw me watching him out of the window. He then got straight in his car and sped off. I took down his registration number. Should I report this on the non emergency number?

My dad lives on the top end of Hartington Road. There are a lot of burglary's up there, usual in the summer holidays when they know families are away.

If lights were on however, it would seem odd to be sussing out the place unless your neighbours away.

Perhaps so but, on the other hand, perhaps they wanted to see if the next door neighbours ( you ) were likely to notice anything if they attempted a burglary next door.

I have thought about these scenarios and decided that I should always open the door with the security chain on and if asked for the £3.00, say hang on a sec, retire from the door and pick up digital camera - snap - and sorry I can't help you !

Nestling in green nowhere
When we lived in deepest Preston Village (50 m from London Rd) a couple of cars turned up at 2am and the sh*tc*nts inside got out and tried booting my and neighbours doors down. Luckily I had dead lock on and neighbours had a dog so despite getting in to their property they soon scarpered. Knackered my front door though. Police turned up and said they were probably Londoners on their way home looking for some booty - not sure how they came to that conclusion.

Palace fans trying to pinch some decent trousers and fashionable trainers.
