Jim Gannon is the man Dick Knight wants to be Albion manager and the chairman is prepared to wait to land him.
Gannon is back in the north west pondering whether to join the Seagulls or stretch his loyalty to cash-strapped Stockport following productive talks with Knight at Gatwick yesterday.
The 40-year-old heads a shortlist of three candidates to succeed Micky Adams in the Albion hotseat.
Knight also met one of Gannon’s rivals yesterday. He is due to hold discussions with the other contender today but there is not much doubt who he would love to see in the Withdean dugout.
“I had another good meeting with another candidate but I think Jim is edging it,” Knight said. “He is the man for us.
“We had a very thorough meeting and during it he confirmed my best thoughts about him in terms of his perspective on the game. We were in accord on a whole number of things.”
Gannon flew back to Manchester to take part in a pre-arranged local radio show last night about his musical tastes. Talk inevitably turned to the Albion vacancy but he has yet to make his mind up.
Knight confirmed: “He hasn’t said yes and he hasn’t said no. Right now he is undecided.
“It’s a huge decision for him because he has been at Stockport as a player for over 500 games and as manager.
“That says a great deal about his loyalty.
“He has been absolutely part of the furniture there so I fully understand there is a decision to be made and I am giving him time to think it through. He knows I can’t wait forever but I haven’t put a time limit on it.”
Radio and TV reports yesterday suggested early favourite Paul Ince was the other candidate interviewed but his agent, Steve Kutner, reiterated to The Argus there has been no contact.
Knight added: “I’ve now got well over 50 applicants of very good quality and there is one other person that I am due to meet today.”
