Knight: It's your call, Jim

Jim Gannon is the man Dick Knight wants to be Albion manager and the chairman is prepared to wait to land him.

Gannon is back in the north west pondering whether to join the Seagulls or stretch his loyalty to cash-strapped Stockport following productive talks with Knight at Gatwick yesterday.

The 40-year-old heads a shortlist of three candidates to succeed Micky Adams in the Albion hotseat.

Knight also met one of Gannon’s rivals yesterday. He is due to hold discussions with the other contender today but there is not much doubt who he would love to see in the Withdean dugout.

“I had another good meeting with another candidate but I think Jim is edging it,” Knight said. “He is the man for us.

“We had a very thorough meeting and during it he confirmed my best thoughts about him in terms of his perspective on the game. We were in accord on a whole number of things.”

Gannon flew back to Manchester to take part in a pre-arranged local radio show last night about his musical tastes. Talk inevitably turned to the Albion vacancy but he has yet to make his mind up.

Knight confirmed: “He hasn’t said yes and he hasn’t said no. Right now he is undecided.

“It’s a huge decision for him because he has been at Stockport as a player for over 500 games and as manager.

“That says a great deal about his loyalty.

“He has been absolutely part of the furniture there so I fully understand there is a decision to be made and I am giving him time to think it through. He knows I can’t wait forever but I haven’t put a time limit on it.”

Radio and TV reports yesterday suggested early favourite Paul Ince was the other candidate interviewed but his agent, Steve Kutner, reiterated to The Argus there has been no contact.

Knight added: “I’ve now got well over 50 applicants of very good quality and there is one other person that I am due to meet today.”

The ball is in your court Jim says Knight

Not that I'm complaining or anything - Uncle Dick sounds very positive and I'm sure his quotes are geared at giving further persuasion to Gannon - but it seems a bit disrespectful to the other candidates. It'll all be a bit Steve McClaren if they get offered the job now.

I reckon White and Booker will be in charge for the Crewe game.I'm not expecting Gannon to make his decision today. He will probably want to talk to County's board one last tme to see if things can be improved.

Not really. The other canidates are probably aware Gannon is first choice but are hoping he will turn it down so they can give it a bash and prove Knight wrong.

Yeah...I've turned job interviews round from a similar situation before...but it must be a bit weird having the bloke who's interviewing you publicly announcing that he's going to give the job to someone else if they get back to him by the end of the week.

When Gannon was on radio Manchester last night he said he wasn't offered the job yet, but Knight is saying he has offered it to him more or less.

I really don't have a good feeling about this one now. I'm not going to be devastated though as there are others out there but get the feeling we are putting all our eggs in one basket with comments like that.

I cannot for the life of me see what there is to gain from Knight showing his hand so publicly.

Not very professional considering he is apaprantly due to talk to someone else today, who one can only assume, will probably have read this.

If we get Gannon all well and good. If we don't, then the new manager will have been undermined before even getting the job.

Fingers crossed.

My thoughts exactly - why go so public about this? If Gannon turns us down we're going to look f***ing stupid and whoever then gets offered the job will know they weren't first choice.

This is what happens when too much is said in public too soon. Stockport County FC set the the ball rolling by announcing that we were interested in Gannon - very unprofessional of them (but, it would seem, typical of the shambolic way that Club is being run). The press then focus on one candidate and half the negotiations have to take place in the full glare of publicity about the details.

No-one should be surprised if it all turns pear-shaped. I just hope that Gannon realises that he'd be better off walking away from Edgeley Park.
