A hosepipe and sprinkler ban is being imposed on people across Kent and Sussex, South East Water has confirmed.

The firm said it "had no choice" following the driest July on record.

The measure, which comes into force on 12 August, affects at least one million people, and rule-breakers could be hit with a £1,000 fine.

It follows pleas from the water company for people to only use water for essential purposes during hot weather warnings and shortages last month.

The ban will prohibit people from using a hosepipe to water plants, wash the car or fill a paddling pool.

Anything designed, adapted or used to serve the same purpose as a hosepipe cannot be used, like sprinklers and irrigation systems or pressure washers.

Well your bit of Sussex, we are still OK over here in RH20. Notice our waterbutts are both a bit empty, lets hope we have a traditional August...

Deepest, darkest Sussex
Hardly a surprise when you look at this, focusing on France but the south east of the UK at the top is no better

So not enough water for the current number of customers in the area. How the hell then are they going to provide water for the thousands of new homes being built?

In many of the drier states in the US water butts are banned. They delay water getting back into the water table. Large fines and strictly enforced.
Worth considering for the U.K.?

This is Southern Water. The firm who are consistently fined for tipping sewage into rivers and the sea.

If they cleaned up their act , stopped getting fines and declaring huge profits then they could fix the leaks , improve their reservoirs and not impose bans.

People need to be educated to use less water. No need to wash the car every week or water borders etc etc.

The bigger issue in the UK ins something different, non-permeable driveways with no soakaway grill. Causes flooding...

Not that I disagree with your comments about Southern Water, it is South East who have declared the hosepipe ban, Southern haven’t (yet)

If the water companies invested in their infrastructure rather than in their shareholders and senior management maybe we wouldn't have to save water at all.

And if they weren't constantly paying fines for polluting our sea and waterways, maybe the bills wouldn't need to be so high.

Nationalise our water and sewerage.
