PERHAPS Ken Bates’s next move will be to step in and save Oldham Athletic as his old club stares into the abyss. The Chelsea chairman will be aware that the Nationwide League second division club, where he was briefly in charge in the mid-1960s, could be wound up at an extraordinary general meeting on July 18 if new investors are not forthcoming.

Bates is more likely to be of the opinion that market forces are at work. He's the biggest **** in British football, which is quite an achievement as competion for the title is fierce.
