Agree totally

1) while I didn't want to lose, if we'd won, the frenzy it would have whipped up, courtesy of The Sun etc would have been ridiculous, and we'd have followed up with a huge let down against the Swiss and Croats. Better to start slowly and build on it.

2) France should (unless they decide to screw us over) beat both the other teams, meaning a win and a draw with see us through. Very achievable.

3) Result aside, we played well, and should take confidence from the performance. Especially King, Rooney and Lampard. They should now feel they can stand up to any team in the world. The defence, previously the weak point, looked very in control, apart from the two late errors.

4) France will be extremely cocky now and set up beautifully for their comeuppance, preferably in the final against us. The likes of Henry and Pires gave the impression yesterday they thought they only had to turn up to win. That plan nearly went tits up.

5) We always start tournaments slowly, and pick up. Think of the dire performance against Sweden in the last world cup, or Switzerland in Euro 96, or any tournament you care to mention.

6) We were never going to beat France twice (and we'd probably have to play them again to win the thing) so we've drawn them into an inflated sense of their own ability, should we meet them later on. And we've proved we can compete on the same level. I would honestly fancy us to beat them next time round. It's fate!

7) Henry and Trezeguet were complete arse all night, thanks to Campbell and King. Rio who?

8) Did you see how bad Switzerland and Croatia were in their game yesterday?

Let's be honest, was it that implausible before the game that France would come out on top of their game and bowl us over 3-0? They didn't, we matched them and deserved to win, so we're only in the situation we thought we might be in, only knowing we can do it against the best in the world - Let's take it out on the moutain goats on thursday! - they're so bad they capped Ramon Vega! More than once!

totally agree, i think based on that performance last night we can beat both the swiss and croats. Obviously feel gutted but looking forward to the next match and I'm sure the players are too.

i was as gutted as anyone to see us snatch defeat from the jaws of victory like that, but there's no point getting too negative about it.

both rooney and especially king were superb, and frank lampard put in a decent performance as well. you got to remember who we were playing against as well, france have arguably the two best players in the world playing for them, and there's hardly a weak link in the team.

we made them look distinctly average for 90 minutes and were just really, really unlucky to lose. that happens in football.

As I said on the other thread ...

I actually think that was a good England performance last night. For about 60% of the game we played REALLY well, Rooney was easily the best player on the pitch and if Barthez had been made to stand on his line for penalty we could have been 2-0 up going in to the 90th minute. Scholes and Owen were poor and Heskey for Rooney in retrospect was a tactical error, but apart from that it was a good 'joined up' performance against one of the best teams in the world.

Well played lads, unlucky - that's football. Now I know how the Swindon fans felt!

However, I do think we'll now finish second in the group. That means we'll play the winners of group A. Which I think will be Spain. I'm not convinced we'll beat them.

We can, of course, but like at the last World Cup, losing this match to France means we have the harder route onwards.

Anyone else think that game was rather like watching the Albion?

Lots of high balls up to the short guy up front, few passes on the floor where the skilful strikers need them. Solid in defence but ultimately clinging on for long periods, allowing the opposition possession while restricting them to few actual chances.

That challenge by Heskey was positively Oatway-sque, while you could easily visualise Roberts or Kuipers making that challenge by Jones at the end.

Obviously England lost though, whereas we win, so that's where the similarity ends.:lolol:

There are a billion people in this world who believe a son of a deity was born to a virgin mother. I think I'm allowed to believe England can win five games of football.

Couldn't agree more. Of course Leon would have buried the penalty as well!
