From a football blog:

I understand that the whole Italian World Cup squad are now demanding to be returned to Italy to visit Pessotto and to find out exactly what the circumstances are regarding this tragedy.

With the continued threat of relegation and heavy punishment hanging over Juventus for their part in the match fixing scandal, the real reasons for Pessotto’s fall seem unclear although there are sure to be many conspiracy theories launched by fans until the actual details emerge.

The big question is: just how badly do some people at Juventus want to distance themselves from punishment for their part in the match fixing scandal?

The Italian game is corrupt to the core - but at least they are doing something about it and prosecuting people, hence why this poor bloke felt the window looked an attractive option.

What's the latest I wonder on Mike Newell's allegations of widespread bung activity in the English game apart from the usual attempts by the FA to hush up the whole embarrassing subject?

The thing about the Italian FA is that they don't mess around, if someone is found guilty of fraud/bungs/match fixing they get punished, that is usually a massive fine or relegation several divisions. As far as I can remember the only time our FA has been anywhere near as decisive was with Leeds City and Swindon Town, if only FIFA and UEFA dealt with matters in a similar way. I suspect we will see a rush of players trying to get out of Italy and into countries like Spain/England/Germany to avoid the scandal or to move before it is too late and they find themselves playing in the Picardy Provincial Leagues.

That's the strange thing, though, cos he wasn't implicated himself. He was pushed ;)

Mmmmm.........you would have thought that Dario Fo had probably written the last word on Italians falling out of windows in mysterious circumstances, but once again life is proved stranger than art.

Time for a sequel to Accidental Death of an Anarchist? ;)

In this instance, we may get a follow-up to Elio Petri's masterpiece, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion.

Pessotto, the club's sports director, is not implicated in the scandal.

His wife Reana said he was unhappy with his role at the club and had been suffering from depression.

"He kept telling me that there was too much difference between being on the field and behind a desk," she said.

Pessotto was taken to a Turin hospital on Tuesday with multiple fractures after falling an estimated 15 metres from a dormer window in the building's roof.

A Turin hospital official speaking on Sky Italia television said police were investigating a suicide attempt.

A Juventus spokesman said: "Gianluca suffered multiple fractures, but his life is not in danger."

Police investigate the fall at the Juventus club offices in Turin
Pessotto was appointed Juve's sports director in May after 11 years as a player, during which he won 22 caps for Italy.

From lunchtime's Sporting Life...

The condition of Juventus general manager Gianluca Pessotto has deteriorated, doctors treating him at a Turin hospital have revealed.

The 35-year-old is in intensive care at Le Molinette hospital after falling from a window at the club's headquarters in Turin on Tuesday.

Pessotto sustained multiple fractures in the fall and has already undergone two operations in a bid to stop internal bleeding.

And medics have now expressed concern over the state of Pessotto's health.

"We cannot say if he will survive," said doctor Pierpaolo Donadio, head of the intensive care unit at Le Molinette Hospital.

"We will not reveal the prognosis for recovery and we really cannot say when we will be able to do so."

His wife Reana Pessotto has already confirmed reports that her husband had been suffering from depression, adding to speculation he may have tried to take his own life.

This is dreadful. Surely he wouldn't have jumped just because he was finding it tough behind the desk. He wouldn't be a poor man, just resign!

Nah, there's more to this .....

what would happen if juve did get relegated 1/2 divisions?

would their top players leave or would they see their contracts out and if they did stay wouldn't that be a little unfair on the other teams in the league as surley juve would walk the league!

seems that it would also affect the lower teams as there would probably be one less promotion spot up for grabs.

just imagine if Chelsea got relegated into league 1 for similar offences and brighton missed out on automatic promotion because chelsea walked the league.
as much as id laugh at the sight of chelsea playing yeovil on a wet tuesday night it would still piss me off if we missed out.

They were saying on the news that Roma and Inter (?) are licking their lips at the thought of great players being sold off cheaply as fire-damaged goods.
