The idea that China are the biggest culprits for CO2 emmissions is a myth. If you see the below link of countries emmisions per capita China are not even in the top 30. Also China is investing far more than any other country in clean / renewable energy, see 2nd link

The Gulf states are the biggest culprits so why does everyone bash China? Do your research
But they have the biggest capita.....

The fact that 75% of their population are bare foot peasants who have never seen a car may therefore be neither here nor there if the rest of them are burning oil and coal like there is no tomorrow.

She broke her bail conditions

Well done phoebe, enjoy your bird

Not that it will matter to her, another trust fund baby who doesn't need to work, doesn't need to go anywhere, doesn't have to worry about a criminal record.
As someone a bit concerned about the environment it does disappoint me when the issues are repeatedly turned into frivolous trivia by the madcap antics of so-called protestors machine-gunning themselves and their cause in the face.

I don’t support the tactic of blocking motorway traffic. It’s just too dangerous. For many reasons.
It isn’t draconian to be arrested for obstructing traffic for no good reason. That isn’t a result of the new laws. That law has been around for a long time.

This woman is EXACTLY what the cause doesn’t need. Entitled art student type who refuses to work with the authorities.

Glad she got arrested and glad she didn’t get her hash browns.

This is the problem too. DM readers of a certain type will see her mug splashed across the pages and it’ll just confirm what they suspect. The way she looks, her actions and disregard for the law, the pearl clutching will be horrendous and just harden views. Basically, it’s exactly what you don’t want. JSO need to stop the martyr angle.

Nobody likes being told “we are better than you, so when we break the law it’s for a good cause, so it doesn’t count”. And that’s JSO’s message right now, and it doesn’t work for me. The government have been doing exactly the same and they are hugely unpopular.

firstly, they are not peaceful if they are conducting vandalism. thats time and effort people have lost, not all violence is phyisical. secondly, this campaign is asking for something not deliverable. if we stopped all licencing tomorrow we'd still be using fossil fuels from elsewhere. if we stop their use tomorrow we'd lose materials, chemicals, food, medicines, equipment we depend on in modern world, before touching the energy and transport issues. we know we need to "phase out" and are doing so, let it take the time it needs.
Not sure where you live but just walk around Brighton and you will see tons of long lasting real vandalism (smashed bus stop windows and graffiti ) rather than the easily removed powder. The campaign would be silly to ask for a 5% reduction as they would get max 5%. What they are trying to do is make an impact statement and get SOME reduction in fossil fuel usage. I guess this is another divisive debate i.e. do you believe in climate change or deny it and people will adhere to their doctrine. I have seen comments about them being spongers - a lot of the people arrested have been retired professionals.

That’s not actually the issue - it’s the powers of Stop and Search that allow someone to be stopped in the first place without any suspicion they are intending to commit a crime that people are protesting about and why innocent people got taken into custody at the Coronation protests - so focussing on ‘intention’ as if it’s a criteria not only misses the point but is a misplaced concern ( and ignores the implications S&S has for civil liberties)

- the current police powers of S&S under PACE , particularly as amended by anti- terrorist legislation is not much better than the Sus Laws of the 70s/80s except it’s any kind of protester/‘delinquent’ being targeted now not just young black men.

A police officer has powers to stop and search you if they have ‘reasonable grounds’ to suspect you’re simply carrying an item that could be used to commit a criminal act . That item could be ‘intrinsically harmless’ like orange power or a can of tomato soup Or a blank piece of card.

(However, you don’t have to assist them by providing any information.)

Proving Intention to commit a crime doesn’t come into it and doesn’t need to be proven at this stage (nor even until someone is actually charged and it is referred to the CPS - it’s enough that the police suspect you may be carrying an item, that taking into consideration, your location, description of your clothes etc and the nature of the item, it can be reasonably suspected that you were planning to commit an offence (vandalism, public disorder, unlawful/unlicensed demonstration, sit ins etc) by using that item they suspect you are in possession of.

More importantly- depending on the area and your location eg at a demonstration, art gallery, snooker hall, road block, anti-monarchy protest etc , a senior police officer can give blanket permissions for lowly uniformed officers to stop and search you for items that could objectively be used to commit an offence without any reasonable suspicion that you have such items in your possession at all let alone harbouring a suspicion that you intend to use them to commit an offence. If they find any such items, that is then used to formulate a ‘reasonable ‘ suspicion you may intend to commit a criminal act.

Its the excessive and wide sweeping powers that the police now have on our streets that are being used to silence free speech and civil protest that rightly concerns most liberal minded people people and the net is scooping up a far wider demographic than the unfortunate young black men who were outrageously targeted in the 80s under the Sus Laws and which culminated in the Brixton and Toxteth riots and rightful repeal of those dreaded and draconian powers.
great comments. These new laws will do little to combat criminal gangs and knife crime.

In my youth in Brighton if walking home in early hours every chance would be stopped. We were all law abiding and never saw nothing wrong with this.

Good to see Labour are now moving toward no new licences in the north sea.
????
Several union leaders- Rachel Reeves and Sir Keir Starmer have distanced themselves from this policy over the last two weeks.

Most recently:

(Source The Times)

The Rosebank oil and gas field west of Shetland is expected to get the go-ahead within weeks, following reassurances from Sir Keir Starmer that he would not block the development if a Labour government comes into power at the next general election.

Did you see them blocking the 400m runners the other day at the Diamond League meeting ? They are silly. Those guys could have seriously injured themselves at the speeds they are moving… Those spikes hurt as well…
