I played lacrosse for half a season - never really got to grips with it - but it is a very dangerous and physical sport - you do need the padding. Also a lack of general intellignce helps! Men's lacrosse allows physical contact unlike the girlie version.

Why all the talk about Americans? Lacrosse is Canada's national sport.

The fights are dealt with by the officials just as they are in hockey. If the two combattants are willing, they let them get on with it and deal with it afterwards.

Anyways, they were big men, probably all over 6' tall. These, however, are kids, showing them how it should be done:

Americans.

Native Americans actually. Lacrosse began as an Indian game, a substitute for tribal warfare.

There's an apocryphal story that the legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne once said "Lacrosse? At Notre Dame? Not while I'm here. What kind of idiot gives a football player a stick?"

Indeed. in the clip just above yours, the losing team is Six Nations (Mohawks).

Mind you, box lacrosse as shown in these clips is a bit different to field lacrosse, which is what the natives substituted for warfare.

I've got nephews who play field lacrosse. Their mother can't watch more than a few minutes at a time, now that they're no longer playing youth rules...

we had the world cup here in Perth a few years ago - it's well physical. Apprantly the top 4 nations are / were at the last world cup USA, Australia, Canada and The Iroquai Indians!

Used to live close to Cheadle tennis club, which at the time was home to the UK national lacrosse champions, and there regularly used to be pitched battles. And none of that namby pamby us type punches that don't hurt. They used to use their sticks on each other in full blown warfare.

It is a VERY violent sport.

Cheadle Cricket Club - not tennis!!! (Actually they've only just started playing tennis there again) Cheadle are still the Lacrosse champions.
