He was like a 'old school' Eddie Izzard in some respects, particularly in the way he would draw you in to his world using a a seductively soft voice making you want to know what happened next, yet be just as likely to raise his voice to make a punchline. A very clever comedian whose style suited the 'just after the watershed' timeslot. Plenty of religious jokes, whiskey in hand, he stood head and shoulders above the rest.

If it makes sense, you could hear AD go all misty eyed as he went straight back to a Dave Allen audience.

He used to do a weekly comedy show many years ago and it was one of the funniest ever. Some of the sketches were absolutely brilliant and unforgettable.

I don't know if any of them are on Youtube. Might be worth checking out.

He was brilliant and used to really take the piss out of religion, but in a totally funny way.

Absolutely brilliant, especiallly live, never stopped laughing.

Saw him twice, and both times had a glass of champagne from him during the show. First time was in Cardiff, (long story), and being English was given a glass and then at the Dome in the eighties, in the front row with my wife, we had a bit of banter just before the interval. After the interval, he asked my wife and I to approach the stage whereupon, he passed a large glass of quality champers to the both of us. Lovely bloke.

Saw him a couple of times...brilliant comedian. at the done, and also I thought we saw him at the brighton theatre royal...he was the first comedian I saw that swore heavily on stage...maybe the blueprint for modern comedians?

He was the absolute double of my late father.....in fact my dad used to go to Ireland weekly for work and many times he was stopped asking for autographs...

I remember a good one he did about giving directions. Somebody stops him and asks for a road and he says "Keep going, you'll see a road on the right. Go past that. You'll see a second road on the right. Go past that and you'll see a road on the left. It's that one." The guy replied "Why didn't you just say first road on the left"? and Dave Allen says "I replied. 'Who's giving these f***ing directions? Me or you?"

He was great; I'm sure a lot of his appeal was down to the voice/presentational style of story-telling. Also, I loved his constant piss-taking out of religion. One of the few comedians I never thought of as over-rated.

There was a great one he did about teaching kids how to tell time, along the lines of...

it was the ghost story monologues he would tell at the end of his shows....he had everyone in the palm of his hand...the lights would go down, the camera pan in toward his face....everyone knew it was a gag, but his delivery was so good

You don't get so many stand-up comedians who do long / story gags any more. I miss Dave Allen, I saw him live in the late 80s and he swore quite a bit, but his delivery and timing was superb.

I see glimpses of him in some of Rhod Gilbert's stuff.
