Boris Johnson is battling to contain growing Tory anger over his handling of sleaze allegations as he prepares to face a marathon grilling on the Owen Paterson scandal in the Commons tomorrow.
Conservative MPs were furious tonight over comments made by Environment Secretary George Eustice who attempted to dismiss the affair as a “Westminster storm in a teacup”.
The issue risks deepening fresh dividing lines within the party between new Tory intakes representing Red Wall seats and the older guard.
Backbenchers are still seething about being forced to vote to block the suspension of Mr Paterson only for the Government to U-turn on the decision less than 24 hours later.
High Peak MP Robert Largan, one of the new generation of Tory MPs elected in 2019, criticised Mr Eustice’s attempt to downplay the row, telling Times Radio: “I don’t think it’s very helpful to say, ‘oh, it’s just a storm in a teacup’.
“In my view this was something that we got badly wrong and they need to fix it.”
Another Tory MP elected in 2019 said Mr Eustice’s comments were “complete nonsense”.
The backbencher said: “They need to get a grip and understand that this isn’t the way the world works any more. It might have been 20 years ago or something like that, but people expect – rightly so – the highest standards.”
The disquiet follows a scathing attack by Tory grandees on the Government over the weekend, with former prime minister John Major branding his successor “politically corrupt”.
Mr Johnson is expected to face further questions over his holidays to Mustique and more recently Marbella, as well as the funding of the refurbishment of his Downing St flat.
Several former ministers demanded a shift in approach from the Government ahead of today’s three-hour emergency debate on the issue of parliamentary standards after Mr Johnson attempted to exonerate an ally who was found to have committed “egregious breaches” of lobbying rules.
Senior Tory Robert Halfon said he wanted to see “dramatic changes” from the Government when it comes to controversial votes, demanding they cut out the damaging u-turns or risk turning MPs into “cannon fodder”.
“When we are told to do these things we have to be given the ammunition in the field, because it’s like sending troops into battle without proper shoes or armour in order to fight that battle,” Mr Halfon said.
Another former minister Tobias Ellwood said Mr Johnson needed to consider his legacy. “We need to find our moral compass and get back to what the British people want us to do – good policy, good governance, leadership, statecraft.”
Last week’s scandal led to the security for the standards commissioner Kathryn Stone having to be beefed up, amid accusations from ministers that she should stand down, something branded “appalling” by her allies.
Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle is expected to spell out plans to “protect the integrity” of Parliament, by launching an independent review of the standards committee.

Amazing that it's taken this long for the electorate to release what a disgusting corrupt lazy incompetent twunt we have as PM. When he eventually goes, his legacy will be nothing but destruction. Even those stupid enough to still back Brexit can surely see it's not Brexit itself but his appalling implementation of Brexit that is ruining the UK.

Well, if some future PM and Cabinet put us back in the single market at least it would resolve the unimplementable Irish Protocol problem, Britain's complete inability put any sort of infrastructure, technology, systems and staff in place to implement any sort of import controls and would stop the financial markets haemorrhaging business to financial centres around the world. That would certainly lessen the horrendous economic impact of Britain leaving the EU to a significant degree.
Surely, only a complete and utter moron wouldn't want that

I have to agree that the man is twunt of the first order and it is an embarrassment to this country to have him as our PM.
I agree that there are 'less bad' Brexits than what we now have... but I have to say Brexit, in every form, is a net loss for the majority of us.......
That's my opinion too, but to give ourselves a chance of making it work, we really needed to stay inside the CU and pay for access to the SM. At that point, other stuff could be up for negotiation.

If I remember correctly I believe you were a 'traditional' conservative, and probably anti-Brexit, as were most 'traditional' supporters of all major parties. If you had got a sensible politician like Rory Stewart as leader, how many 10s of thousands wouldn't have died, we wouldn't have left the single market and we wouldn't have been where we are now,

Wow. The Express have criticised the PM…….on their front page. This must be the first time they’ve gone for Johnson since he has had the top job. Whilst the Mail goes for the PM quite regularly now (after covid in care homes), if that scum rag Express stops turning a blind eye to Johnson’s sleaze, he could be in trouble come the next election.

Johnson went (back) into potential super-spreader mode yesterday when he visited the hospital - so as to avoid turning up in the Commons - without wearing a mask. Given that NHS is now committed to dismissing staff that don't get the jab, maybe we could extend this to politicians who won't wear a mask - in the Commons or in hospitals?
