Just done my first 2012 Brighton Marathon training run. Blimey it was hard work.

In my experience (i'm shit at running) Going loads slower than you think you should be going is the best way. Also the first 10/15 minutes are always hellish, but once you get through that you'd be surprised how far you could go.

Absolutely. I am crap at running, but I found if I went slow enough I could last for ages. Initially I was going so slow I could easily have walked faster, but that wasn't the point, "time running" was the factor, and after a few sessions I was able to get gradually faster. I managed over an hour running within a few sessions. People always start too fast.

Good luck with the training! I think I'm going to start mine soon. Not looking forward to it! Doing it for the Alzheimer's society in memory of my granddad, Norman Wisdom. Will hopefully get a few contributions from here closer to the time. Everybody seems to be very charitable!

Also, don't skimp on the shoes. Find a specialised shop that has a thingymebob (technical name) that slooows down your landing/impact of your foot on the ground. They can offer different shoes for different landings/feet styles and it REALLY makes a huge difference. Usually free to be shown the difference, and upon noticing it most people take them up!

*By slows down, I mean video records and replays with really slow framerates. They don't put you in a low gravity chamber or summit..

I was just on 10 minutes a mile

All through my training for this year's marathon, that was the pace I ran at. I managed to keep it going until I was doing over 15 miles, but I slowed a bit after that on the longer runs.

I've kept going once a week through the year (6-7 miles) and my pace is now quicker, so I'm hoping that I can keep to the faster pace as the distance increases again.

Truro half marathon on Sunday if I can shake off the cold I've had for the last month, but not expecting much of a time, to be honest, as I haven't done any long runs for ages.

The second time you do it you will have more of an idea of what pace you can go at.

Good show Tim, I did it in 2010 and 2011 so am having a well earned rest this year - my only tip is to avoid running down the shoreham power station on your training runs as you hit it around mile 20 on the actual marathon and it's the most dull/dragging bit. Ignorance is bliss

Its also my first marathon next year. I joined the gym back in may but struggling to get motivated. Live right on the seafront so starting to do small runs when I can. Iv gone from doing absolutely nooooo exercise though and its tough! Im running for cancer research in memory of my grandad who died last year.
Was thinking of joining a running club, anyone know of any in hove area?

Did Edinburgh a couple of years back.

Start slow and modest with the training, most people try too much too soon.

As mentioned above, invest in shoes. And get good socks – double layered and so on.

Be prepared to hit setbacks and injuries in your training – there's a danger of getting obsessive about your progress, and that makes setbacks unnecessarily hard.

Enjoy it: the actual day is a superb experience.
