The police also said there are machines doing the rounds that can read the data on the cards...from now on I will make sure my hands cover the reader and stand over the machine.....

Line them with foil, that's the best way to make sure any card readers are unable to take your details.

Couple of years ago the staff of a BP Garage in Lightwater Surrey were prosecuted as they had a CCTV for security but another camera trained on the key pad of the card reader machine and it filmed all transactions. If you used the card in any establishment you wouldn't know if that was happening.

The biggest problem, is that most numeric key pads are laid out in the same format so it easy to watch somebody and guess fairly accurately their pin number by their finger movement.

Bensgrandad knows tooooooooooooooooo much about this. Think he could be the man. What a scumbag, BG you need to own up and hand yourself in now. :ban:

I'm pretty careful about these things now. I had money taken out of my account in mid-December, the bank (Barclays) didn't refund until January. It spoilt the kids Christmas. I always check the ATM for scanners and cover my pin when inputting the number. I've also set up a deposit account for internet use, and I'll be changing my card again shortly. Overkill probably, but its made me somewhat paranoid.

Did you hand your card over to them ?

A few petrol stations in Sussex had staff swiping the cards (clone it) then taking the PIN. That way you get your card, are none of the wiser, they make a copy and off they go.

Glad to hear HSBC are on the ball though

Is that not slander? You should be very careful. Being in the pub trade and obviously having villains frequenting pubs you hear many of these type of stories some true some not. The one about the BP Garage I know to be true because he court case was reported in the papers and the offenders were sent down for a longish time.

I might be paranoid but I've got in the habit of keying in the number with my left hand whist covering it with my wallet. I also have perfected putting the pin in with three fingers so even if watching it would be almost impossible to see the number.
With you there Happypig....do exactly the same....I do get the odd phone call from 'Bank Security'..please confirm your card details...."Oh I will go and get my card".....then just leave them hanging on....but noticed the last one was all automated and asked you to key in your birthdate...then it says sorry did'nt get that please re-enter your birthdate...before you know it you have dialled a premiun number at £15 at £15 a minute....scum....beware..

big problem with this in oz a few years ago ......koreans from memory had a little gadget that attached to atm that read your pin as you made a withdrawal.........they would then follow and pick-pocket you at the earliest oppurtunity and hot trott to the nearest atm..........all the atms have a cover s over the pin panel now......... thieving kerunts.

Luckily the police know where at at what time the card was used and hopefully the scumbag doing this will be caught from CCTV.

Don't be so sure. Unfortunately this crime is too commonplace, that I don't think it gets chased up very often. My wife had her cards stolen a few years back, and I thought exactly the same thing, but was told that nothing would happen.

Just heard back from the Police, as the two ATM's were not covered by CCTV ( Interesting that the scumbags maybe knew that), they can't do anything more so its just down to experience. The lady on the call was very apologetic but there is precious little they can do.

I have just updated my Tom Tom for work and it asked me for my credit card details and now I am all paranoid about using it!!!

Banks have always tried to make out that chip and pin is theft / fraud proof but if that was the case they would refund money as quickly as they do.

It happened to me once and £400 pounds disappeared before I realised that my card had been stolen.

Is anybody still paying for credit card theft / fraud insurance? It's always struck me as pointless if the bank is going to refund your money without it.

Funny that.......I nearly said don't hold your breath for CCTV evidence.
