I appreciate most of you probably saw the match on Sky, but here is my insight into how the game went:

First of all, to all the fans who were saying it is a rubbish away day, I have no idea what you were talking about. I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience that was only spoiled by the mostly lacklustre game.

The stadium:
Ok it's not the best of stadiums, but it's certainly not the worst I've been to this year. A good atmosphere can be created at times.

The pie: A fairly good balti pie, not the best I've ever had, but did the job.

The fans:
Brighton - our fans were very noisy to start off with, but as the first half went on, we went very quiet, perhaps in frustration to how the game was going. Picked up again in the second half, and got behind the team to lift them to score a goal.
Colchester - some of the friendliest, most welcoming fans I've chatted to. The ones I spoke to were very complimentary of our season, our setup and the Amex, and one of them even voluntarily showed me to the bar and to the away turnstiles. During the game, there was a very poor turnout from them and they weren't particularly lively. Perhaps expected for a mid-table team on a bank holiday monday.

The match:
Brighton were very average in the first half and never really got going. To be honest, Colchester outplayed us and, considering they had a reputation as hoofball merchants, played some very good passing football, albeit quite direct. In the second half Brighton were much better and created some good chances, but still never really reached our best.

The players:

Ankergren: Got subbed early on through injury and didn't really have much involvement. Should have been taken off straight away as it arguably led to the goal we conceded.

Painter: Exactly what we have come to expect from Marcos. Not a stand out performer, but consistent and reliable. Also made some good runs forward.

Elphick: Defended ok, though looked a bit uncomfortable on the ball at times.

Dunk: Not a brilliant performance, but all the same, looks to fit into our style perfectly. Comfortable on the ball and always moving into spaces looking for the pass. Showed his inexperience at times, but will only get better.

Calderon: Quite a good match for the Spaniard, combined well with the midfield to get forward, though he sometimes got caught too far forward.

Dicker: Seemed to go missing for much of the game. Never really got control of the ball and gave away too many passes.

Navarro: Disappointing performance, didn't manage to do the same job that Bridcutt has done so well this year. Gave away far too many passes.

Bennett: Comfortable performance without excelling. Made some good attacking contributions, including the assist for the goal.

Noone: Man of the match for me. Looked to be our only creative outlet for much of the match, looked very lively and made the Colchester defense look very nervous.

Barnes: Very strong performance and always looked like scoring. Well taken goal, and our best outfield player after Noone.

Wood: Won some good headers, but didn't get into the game an awful lot. Had two or three good chances and perhaps should have put at least one of them away.

Sub:

Brezovan: Very solid when he came on and made some fantastic saves. Kept us in the game on a few occasions and was very reassuring.

All in all, a good away day that was slightly tarnished by a distinctly average performance by Brighton. Will definitely go again if we get the chance in the future.

It was far worse than an average performance:lolol:

Fair point, I was trying to be optimistic! We definitely missed Murray and Greer, but most of all Bridcutt I'd say. I know a lot of people on here like Navarro, but for me he just wasn't in the same class today.

Disagree about Calderon. He was sloppy at the back at crucial times. The goal for one, the non-existent marking for the v.near over the bar effort at the end of the 1st half. He does have nice hair and a cheeky smile though so more than makes up for any shortcomings.

Agree that he wasn't brilliant defensively, but I think he did add a bit on going forward, particularly in the second half. And he does always get plus points just for being flair.

Just that his first job is as a defender and today he was probably thinking cheeky thoughts instead of concentrating on the game. He is flair though. And he's got a six-pack too.

I thought Navarro looked like he was going to just slot back in come next year - his vision is still there if not the execution right now but that will come with match awareness and fitness. Nearly a year since his last proper start, he's bound to be a bit rusty!

Painter, for me, was one of the better players today. His attacks were good, he had good tracking. Noone was class too. Wood wasn't that bad, Barnes had good movement and a well taken goal. I thought Brez was class. Very well played to make the saves when called for despite not playing for such a long time.

We were shit, if i compare that to every single other performance this year that i've seen (40 odd), that was by far and away the worst. First half was laughable. Second half at best we were average, luckily Colchester were very poor.

Oh, it is an awful away day compared to 90% of games in this league. Crap, soulless, half empty flat packed stadium with a poor atmosphere, miles from the station and town center. We've never had a great atmosphere up there, and i'm glad i won't be going back for a while.

Agree completely about Navarro, Bridcutt has grown into a great player having played most of the season, Nav's first game for nearly a season, he did put one or 2 great passes in and broke up their play, give the guy a chance!

Seagull 27, very concise report, but you couldn't have had that much fun if you made time to write all that !

I had time to think about it during the game! That was the most boring bit...

The station isn't that far from the stadium, only 10 minutes bus journey, which were very well run.

And admittedly one of the best bits of the day was the steward falling through the gate, cue laughs all round and chants of 'she fell over' and 'you fat bastard'. Brilliant.

I thought the centre backs looked poor first half. Though this was, as much as anything else, down to Bridcutt not being there looking for the easy ball from them all the time. IMO we misfired today because Bridcutt (or Kish) wasn't there.
