Just to clarify, some chap was in the park walking a dog and a chicken?

I'd have stroked the chicken, after all you don't get the chance every day....

I was in the park the other day, and this nice old man asked me if I would like to stroke his Cocker Spaniel.

I chose the spaniel.
An excellent decision.

By accepting his kind permission to stroke his dog, it's clear that you weren't prepared to rub him up the wrong way.

It is clear that by describing him as 'nice' that perhaps you were seeking a contrary experience. It may also be that you were soliciting in some way. It is also clear that you fully understood that he was referring to his dog rather than anything else.

I would advise the old man to avoid that park

Which park was it?

I'm not sure I understand where the 'choice' was within the question. If he had said 'would like to stroke my cockOR spaniel?' then I can understand why you thought he was asking you to choose. But he clearly said 'would you like to stroke my cockER spaniel?'. Which doesn't really make sense, unless he was of a forgetful nature and was saying 'er' to give him time to remember the second half of the dog breed. But even then, I cannot see what choice he is offering you. Maybe he just had a strong accent or something?

What you mean you think it's a cock and bull story, not a spaniel after all? This is getting more confusing by the minute.
Apparently he stole the dog and chucked it down a hole workmen were digging in a nearby road.

Throwing a spaniel in the works.
