Part of the first Albion team I saw in the early 60s. "Legend" is probably a bit strong, but his corners were legendary - I remember him scoring direct from at least one. Round shouldered with a bit of pace - scored an exceptional number of goals for an old style winger. RIP

Johnny.
I remember you battling down the wing in your 'never give in' style of play.
RIP

Still picture that promotion day with Johnny and the rest appearing and celebrating in the West Stand at the Goldstone.

What a team that was (for Div 4 !) All 5 forwards scored 15+ goals in the 64-65 season.

happy memories :)

the first Brighton team that I had the pleasure to watch on a regular basis as we moved down permanently at the end of the previous season and I had become well and truly hooked - standing as a lad at the front of the North Stand and bracing for the surge every time we scored - and by God we scored plenty that season. Goodchild was a real battler in the old style - not pretty but very very effective and he set up a good few goals for Bobby Smith as well as helping himself to a few.

That line-up brings back great memories.

Brian Powney: Great goalie. One of the Albion's best.
Mel Hopkins: Ex Spurs. Pure class.
Bobby Baxter: One of my favourite Albion players.
Jack Bertolini: Another of my favourites.
Norman Gall: A rock in central defense.
Dave Turner: Class.
Wally Gould: Another very good player.
Jimmy Collins: One of Albion's best "inside forwards". Another ex-Spurs.
Bobby Smith: Brighton's most exciting signing ever. Another ex-Spurs, and of course England!
Jack Smith: The perfect partner for Bobby. Scored as many as Bobby that season, I believe.
Johnny Goodchild: Can't say more than has already been said in the above posts.

That was some season!!

What's Brian Powney doing outside of his penalty area?

You must have started around the same time as me. The second half of the season before that promotion was my introduction to the Albion. We finished abouth 8th I think. Happy days

I remember the side mentioned above very well. My dad had started to take me to the games and I was hooked. I remember Johnny Goodchild flying down the wing!

As much as the good times are back with the club I still miss night matches at the Goldstone with a big crowd
