Why is Motson so OBSESSED with Rooney?

He had an AVERAGE game last night but Motson was treating it like the second coming.

He missed an EASY chance and laughed, he gave away possession in his own half by buggering about trying to do flicks and instead of linking up play like he was meant to he just insisted on turning into two defenders instead of playing the simple ball.

OBVIOUSLY Rooney IS quality and does run his socks off. But why over-hype him when he is only having a half decent game against the Swiss?

And as for Wes Brown...or Wayne Brown as Motson called him near the end...he is clearly not up to that level of football.

Ian Wright was clearly HATING talking about how good Bentley was as well which was quite funny.

I thought 'Wazza' was excellent, particularly 2nd half. If we are to go to the promised land of South Africa 2010 then I think he'll have a big part to play.

The best bit was when he tried to do a Zidane style double drag back, missed the ball on the second one and banged into the defender then shot wide.

3) Bentley wasn't as good as everyone keeps saying, in fact I thought he was poor in the first half.
4) BBC shouldn't be allowed international football unless they change their pundits. As much as I think it's good that terrestrial tv has rights to England games I think they need to learn how to present it properly before they are given them again as Sky pisses all over them.
5) Agree about the chance he missed, any self respecting international striker whould have buried that.

Rooney is OVERHYPED by all he commentators no matter if its BBC ITV or Sky!

He is a good player, but I dont think he is the be all and end all of English football!!

He is not a goal scorer so hes never going to get 25/30 goals a season so why was he playing up front on his own??

Edit: Just to add, Rooneys 'WORLD CLASS' lob that had Motty creaming himself was infact a miss hit, As Lawro rightly pointed out to Motson!

Rooney is the best player we have by some margin, to say otherwise is wrong.
However Motson is in love with him it seems.

Spot on Richie. Motson's nob sucking of Rooney is EMBARRASSING.

But I have concluded that I simply cannot be arsed to watch international friendly matches. They are overhyped and usually incredibly dull. I was in the pub watching it intermittently with chums, and I just get so frustrated with England. It's like watching school kids as time and time again they give the ball away far too cheaply.

Personally I missed the fisrt half, as I was busy smashing up my bath with a big hammer. My take on the second half was that Rooney was indeed very good, Bentley okay. Crouch proved once again that he is a really useful option to bring on.


Wes Brown, Wayne Bridge are not good enough for that level, though I guess Capello has a right to find that out for himself.

Rooney is class, no doubt about that, but as said earlier, he wasn't on top form last night. Totally agree with Chappers about Bentley too. First half he was poor, got into some good positions and did nothing with them. Lawrenson is a bitter fuckface who shouldn't be allowed to commentate on England. While I don't necessarily want another Motson who will cream himself over anything an England player does I really don't want a vindictive plastic paddy sneering at everything either.

Dont forget that hes only been watching English football properly for a couple of months so hes only going to pick the people that have done well in that period of time, so hes going to pick some 'passengers' like Brown and Bridge if they have had a couple of good games for their clubs!

When the serious stuff starts in September, he will have a very good idea of who the best 23 are!!

Can't argue with any of that...

1. Lawro still as ignorant and out of touch as ever... "Who voted for the ENGLANDFANS player of the year?".. do you need me to spell it out Mark?... though he was right in that Gerrard shouldn't have won it...
2. Motson used to be top notch but he's lost the plot over the last few years. Probably due to working with the twat in statement 1.
3. I must have been watching a different game to Hansen as Bentley was average at best
