Has he done a self-serving publicity stunt in the build up to spending his money? That's the issue with this, "I'm going to shred 10k!" stunt, not him talking about spending his own money.

Good attempt to draw a parallel though and great attempt to stir the pot.

I think he's played all the bigots like a fiddle. Feinted one direction with the '£10k for all this publicity is a bargain' line, only to reveal he did actually donate it all to charity anyway, in addition to all the publicity. Anyone truly against this idea now is just showing themself to be a homophobe (of which I am realising there are a surprisingly large amount amongst football fans).

Interesting isn't it. So many people have an issue with Joe (who was quite clearly never going to shred cash), fewer seem to have an issue with a regime that kills gay people and a gay icon who has taken vast amounts of cash to sportswash. I know what I find more concerning and I'm happy for any celebrity with a bit of a following to put themselves out there to highlight this. Fair play to Alex Scott today too.

I have never thought Joe Lycett particularly funny, but he’s spot on here. And clever - I would have been fairly disgusted if he had actually shredded the money, and never thought he would.

I had to look up what Alex Scott did, and fair play to her too. What (more than) disappoints me is how people can dismiss it as “virtue signalling”. I was vaguely disapproving of the whole Qatari World Cup before, but the more I’ve read, heard and seen about the whole thing over the last few days has really angered me, so it’s heightening awareness. I’ve answered angrily in more than one place comments like “keep sport out of politics.”….. angrily meaning feeling angry about it rather than having a go at the original commenter.

And some of that heightened awareness has come from comments on here, so thank you all!

I don't find Joe Lycett funny but I rather like his point here. I do think it's all a bit muddled and incoherent but well done for going up against such an icon as DB and the Qatari barbarians.

I agree that it's good he's standing up against the likes of Qatar and all those taking the cash from Qatar, and that his stunt is a bit muddled. I just think there are better ways to get publicity than shredding (or fake shredding) money.

Must admit until Lycett brought it up I was unaware of Becks involvement. We now all know and I can take our own view.

People feel more uncomfortable about the £10k rather than the much bigger issue. He could have stated A LOT MORE than 10k (he could afford it) but he actually picked a relatively low amount of money, and it still caused more outrage than the LGBT one.

His point has been proven.

Beckham was a footballing hero , he turned his footballing prowess into a multi million dollar franchise , kick started the tattoo industry , aftershave , clothing ......the guy has done very well for himself and personally i think he could have walked away from the Qatar deal as he certainly doesn't need the money ......Joe Lycett ...?? he may very well be a hero of yours but to me he's just another one of a plethora of unfunny comedians that have come onto the scene in recent years ....i just don't find him funny , i don't find the withdrawal of the one love badge by the FA funny , i don't find the withdrawal of service of alcohol funny , i don't find the political hijacking of a world wide sporting event funny .......its a bad , bad joke ....i certainly didn't find the Iranian goalies 14 minutes of penalty box snoozing funny either .

Of course he was never going to change people's minds – least of all FIFA and/or Beckham – he said that himself. Nor would he have expected the WC to stop, but it shines a(nother) light on a situation that IMO needs addressing.

In many respects it's a bit like the deep dives that John Oliver does about all sorts of subjects. They probably won't change the world instantly, but they get people talking, learning and then remembering more about situations, scenarios and, let's face it, inequalities around the world.

Personally I can't see anything wrong with it, but watching people frothing at the gash about him not destroying £10k, but instead giving it to charity, is pretty funny!

Well you can't can you, and it's right that Beckham has been called out. As I said yesterday, I imagine Joe will say he didn't really shred the £10k, and indeed he's come out and said that. I felt that shredding £10k would be stupid. Many here have disagreed, but it seems that Joe agrees with me.
