[Albion] Joe Cole’s claim that we have “a similar level of player to West Brom”

Pereira is quality, far too good for WBA.

If and when they drop, I’d love him to sign for us.

Been close to putting him in my Fantasy Football team several times this year, if West Brom had been a bit better and he didn't have to carry them virtually on his own I would have put him in.

All of their four January signings turned out really well, if they had those players at the beginning I think things would possibly have looked much brighter for them. Outside the starting eleven they are a lot weaker though.

This.

Needy much?

People start topics. It’s called a discussion forum. That’s how it works.

I mean look at this jackass who needs a lot of attention and the number of threads he’s started of late. Oh. Wait.

Is this the same guy who throws his weight around as mod, and if that’s not enough gets involved in petty squabbles with various members of NSC (where most of the mods are a decent bunch and set a good example).

Oh wait. That’s you. Needy much?

https://nortr3nixy.nimpr.uk/content.php?879-The-Frustration-of-Fun-Free-Football

A longer piece that seeks to wrap up some of the topics from here over the last few weeks. Particularly:

1) We are taking all the fun out of football with an over reliance on technology and statistics
2) Given the frustrations of lockdown and our team it's really little wonder people let rip on social media
3) Talking of letting rip, I actually, genuinely can't wait to be on a fart-filled train carriage from Falmer again

Enjoy. Or don't.

Hopefully @Bozza can provide a short link for you Tapa addicts.

In response to a comment on another thread that all 1980s football was League 2 standard, how about some of that decade's finest moments from those of us who were there?

I could start with one of ours but, instead, plumped for this, because it's ICONIC.

Regular discussions on here about "Potter too good for players" / players not good enough. So, how many of today's squad would get into our first ever PL squad? Name for name.

Here's the first squad of 25

Baldock, Samuel*
Bong, Thomas Gaetan
Duffy, Shane Patrick Michael*
Dunk, Lewis Carl*
Goldson, Connor*
Gross, Pascal
Hemed, Tomer
Hunemeier, Uwe
Izquierdo Mena, Jose Heriberto
Kayal, Beram
Knockaert, Anthony Patrick
Krul, Timothy Michael*
Maenpaa, Niki Emil Antonio
March, Soloman Benjamin*
Murphy, James
Murray, Glenn
Propper, David Petrus Wenceslaus Henri
Rosenior, Liam James*
Ryan, Matthew David
Saltor Grau, Bruno
Schelotto, Ezequiel Matias
Sidwell, Steven James*
Skalak, Jiri
Stephens, Dale Christopher*
Suttner, Markus

https://www.premierleague.com/news/465277

Obviously Sanchez for Ryan because that actually happened. Lamptey for the Greyhound. Veltman probably an equivalent choice to Bruno, very hard to call but certainly White and Webster displace the BFG and Connor, for me. Biss for Dale?

David Petrus Wenceslaus Henri was a regular starter, now can't get in the side. Maupay for Baldock surely? Mac and Lallana for Murphy and Skalak?

And now the toughies. Is Burn a better left back than Suttner. Would you rather have a fit and firing Hemed or Welbeck? A few other arguments on fringe players for me.

Obviously I've left out actual subtleties like under 21s and HGP quota. The point is really to demonstrate (or not) whether you think the current squad is better. For me it is by a country mile.

It was a very daft comment from a Poundland quality pundit. His comparison began a difference between how West Brom play and how we play, "bravely" having players compete high up the pitch to win the ball back and playing all over the pitch. West Brom on the other hand are classic Allardyce in that they play the percentages and second balls rather than a more fluid style of play. He was making a good point to start with, but then drifted away and was immediately rebuked by the presenter and Karen Carney - who both pointed out we have been at this level longer and had our manager for longer, allowing us to develop the style more than West Brom have been able to under Big Sam.

We might be near them in the league, but there's not really a comparison between the football clubs. Maybe West Brom 5 years ago are a reasonable comparison to our team today, but we're very different football clubs.

This is harsh - Joe Cole specifically mentioned us in a fairly poor analysis piece. Why shouldn't it be mentioned on here?

Unfortunately it’s typically what he does. Appalling behaviour from a mod (exacerbated as we can’t ignore moderators).

Probably not the sort of behaviour our club stand for ironically. Perhaps someone should have a word.

I didn’t say he shouldn’t. I just think it’s very needy to expect the media to fawn over us. Especially when, like Jake Humphrey, they’ve been trolled senseless by our fans or when, like Cole, they’re not quite the full shilling.

I don't think that's a fair assessment of the sentiment behind the opening post. The media fawn over our team all the time, the XG kings and statistical darlings of the headscratching pundits trying to work out how we're doing as badly as we are relative to their understanding of how we play the game. I'd like to hear a little less praise from the media for the performance and a little more admiration for the ability to get the results to match the general perception of our team.

I was surprised to hear Joe Cole say he thought there wasn't much between WBA and our teams - I think we're a long way ahead of them. Like others, I think only Johnstone in goal and Pereira would have a chance of getting into our team although Conor Townsend seems a fairly useful left back/wing back. Don't let him take free kicks though.
