I reckon we’ll discover RDZ had a complicated relationship with his players. A proper father figure, but one who could properly turn if someone isn’t executing his instructions
Hadn't the Trossard and Sanchez episodes already demonstrated his maximalism in terms of man management? No indication he tried to keep either on board.

Football managers are reknowned for throwing drinking vessels around in dressing rooms. Used to be tea cups, now it's poncy mineral water bottles.

The thing is, I reckon a requirement of a modern manager is that he can instil a bit of fear into the modern footballer. That they absolutely know they won’t get away with anything and they have to all be singing from the same hymn sheet or else.

Maybe there is a balance to be found though

I don't think the Trossard thing was to do with De Zerbi. I think Trossard had already decided he wanted out and used De Zerbi as an excuse to justify his exit.

So it continues….

Arsenal sniffing around, after Pascal going, I’m not sure I can take much more of this.

From that article;

“Sources suggest that the Seagulls would be prepared to sell at £50m (around €59m) for the exciting Premier League prospect, aiming to make a significant profit on the Brazilian.”

Yeah. Itchy chin. What sources are these again? The sources they’ve just made up? Utter nonsense. And IF we did sell this summer, which I massively doubt, £50m would be a very swift and definitive rejection. I imagine B&B would be aiming at double that figure.

Unless the player has some very specific clauses with release fees to top clubs, ala MacAllister, there’s no way he’s going anywhere short of a sky high figure.

TL;DR - lol no

£50m for a striker who managed 5 non-penalty league goals sounds like a "take the money and run" scenario to me.
That’s mental, that is. 22 year old Brazilian striker on the edges of the national team, who looked excellent at times in his first season with us. We paid a reported £30m+ a sell-on to Watford. £50m minus a, let’s say, 20% sell-on percentage is a notional profit of £16m. No chance. You’re bang wrong on this one.

Pedro is going to be a massive key player for us this season - and if he were to go, a negotiated non-contractual fee would be considerably higher than £50m.

That is a horrendous cherry-picked statistic that really doesn't demonstrate his worth to us or as a footballer.

You've let yourself down there mate, and I say this as someone who doesn't rate Joao Pedro as an out and out striker.

Ha ha!! Completely ridiculous. And how come penalties are down-graded? JP was responsible for one of the single most wonderful moments I have witnessed in my 55 years of following the Albion - namely, the penalty at Marseille. Unbelievable pressure. The guy is one of the top strikers in the Premier League, and has a fantastic all-round game.

Not to mention the fact he won most of those penalties himself

He has qualities and I'd like to see him operate as a false nine-like player under Hurzeler but £50m for a player as impotent as Joao Pedro... its hard to turn down and I'm not sure Tony would. There's a chance Joao Pedro will develop into a top player but there's also a chance it won't happen, and turning down £50m is a big gamble.

I like his work rate and ball control, but his tendency to hold onto the ball for several seconds and then either dribble or pass into a zone where he needs to shot from a hopeless angle or make non-progressive pass just to keep possession. Poor decision making and a lot of flair and hard work with no function.

If he can become wiser and better we can get a lot of use from him but can't be sure that will happen.

The amount of hassle required to make this player 1. productive and 2. ok about us denying him a transfer to Arsenal... isn't really worth it. A quick £50-60m and then bringing in someone a little bit more skilled in the areas of both finishing and setting up our pacy wingers doesn't sound like the worst scenario in my world.

All this depends on Arsenal actually being willing to pay £50m for a player who has not done all that much in this league.

Because its easy to score from penalties and difficult to score elsewhere. Graham Alexander is one of the GOAT penalty takers of all time but that didn't make him a top PL striker.

What does your emotions have to do with this deal being "ridiculous" or not? Neither Arsenal or Tony are going to give a shit about that when negotiating a transfer.

What I will say is this.

Tremendously talented. One of my favourite players and I absolutely think for 50m we have to say no, should be more like 70/75m.

But I started to form an opinion in the 2nd half of last season that he would get into great positions to shoot, and it *seemed to me* he would prefer to try and wait for contact and go down to win himself a penalty vs actually have the conviction to take a shot on goal quite a lot of the time.

Might be a terrible opinion, fine, I understand. But once I started thinking it, I noticed it a lot more (confirmation bias probably?). Was this a lack of confidence in his own ability, or was he told to go down? Or did it not really happen as often as I think it did?

Either way, £50m? They can do one. Using Richarlison as an obvious example, he was £60m a couple of years ago and he's a terrible footballer, nowhere near Pedros level.
