Jimmy Carr - I do not pay a penny more tax than I have to.

Trouble is Cam has f***ed up by only naming Jimmy Carr, you can bet that the papers especially the News International ones will be looking for any Tories or Cam's cronies to name as doing the same. It's obvious that loads of them are at this from footballers to entertainers to politicians and hopefully they will be named and shamed now.

How many footballers do you think are "Cam's cronies" then? What an incredibly blinnkered, one sided view. I wonder how many of "Blair's cronies" are up to it?

I don't think its party political and Cameron might just have got this right in gauging the nations feelings. Yes many Tories will get caught out, but
also other politicians from other parties. If he or any other politician genuinely tries to flush out these tax dodgers (companies and individuals) they
will get my vote

I think its you that's completely ignorant or very blinkered. Tax avoidance is not a party political issue.

My post was about the Irony of Conservatives taking a moral stance on the subject.

I think you don't think.

Ahh I see. Your best input to this discussion is petty name calling and smart arse play on words insults. Well done. Very clever.

The problem being that the highly paid executives in the press probably use the very same schemes !
Indeed

Ultimately as n1 gull says, it is not a party political issue. But lets see what Cameron actually does about this, now that it's out there.

They're not going to be hard to find either. Virtually every wealthy person and successful business avoids tax. Cameron has made a big mistake opening this can of worms.

Brown made some noise about tax avoidance and also passed some legislation to clamp down on it, although only scratching the surface and choosing his targets very carefully. Did he also make a big mistake and open a can of worms or does the can of worms only appear when its a Tory trying to raise tax revenue and balance the books?

I know what your post was about. You are very blinkered if you think it is a Tory vs. Labour issue. Tax avoiders come in all political persuasions and irrespective of which political party is in power.

To assume makes an ass of u and me.

I agree, but this is part of the problem, you need to start somewhere and everyone has skeletons in the cupboard. I think you almost need an
amnesty, then say right we warned you and we are coming to get you. Lets change the law so people like Phillip Green can't fleece us anymore -
lets open the debate.

But, to do that you need to step away from party politics and finger pointing. Lets get more money for OUR country so we don't have to sack so
many nurses, services for the elderly etc

I really don't know why it makes you sick. He has come out and said it is morally wrong and HMRC will be taking action to close the loophole. As mentioned in the OP they have already closed Icebreaker1 and they are working on closing Icebreaker2. Take your obvious political bias out of the equation and consider what actions are actually taken. Loopholes are being investigated and closed all the time regardless of which political party is in power. Perhaps the main difference between the two main parties is that, historically, Labour always spent the money that WASN'T collected whereas the Tories try to only spend the money that IS collected.

Out of interest what do you think my obvious political bias is?! You should probably face up to the fact that there is NO difference between the parties on tax justice. NONE.

I wonder if other comedians will take the piss out of him, or will they be strangely quiet. If it was a Tory politician they'd be all over this,
I suppose we'll have to wait and see

Not ironic at all. Very genuine and he pays his fair share. Clearly, you think that twat Brown had the answers but all he did was spend money he didn't have and try to bankrupt the country. These tax avoidance schemes didn't suddenly appear in 2009 you know.

I know what your post was about. You are very blinkered if you think it is a Tory vs. Labour issue. Tax avoiders come in all political persuasions and irrespective of which political party is in power.

Was it not you that turned into into a Tory v Labour issue with your first post above? Does that not make you blinkered as well!?

Firstly, that's his father, not him. Secondly, or reading that article, it doesn't seem anything like the scheme that Carr has used. I'm pretty sure TB is earning a mint and paying less in tax than most of us would expect him to. None of it is right, and it should be made a voting issue (ie, we'll vote for the party that removes these schemes).

It is a can of worms for him. And he can't act on the problem, he just can't it's too widespread amongst the rich and very powerful. What's he going to do now? Start on Phillip Green? Richard Branson? Vodafone? Google? Facebook?

Of course I think he should. I think our global economy should take tax avoidance more seriously. We wouldn't be in the mess now if we did. BUT - that's the job of politicians. I personally don't blame any individual / company for avoiding taxes. We all do it to some degree (pensions? ISAa?), it just that those schemes open to the rich are more elaborate and effective. The idea that NSC is full of benevolent angels who if they earned a lot of money would totally cease to care about saving money is, frankly, laughable.

FFS pensions and ISAs are not tax avoidance schemes. They are investments for which you get tax relief, very reasonably, as an encouragement to invest to secure your financial future. They are very far from a tax dodge and even more necessary since Brown sig=ngle handedly detroyed the UKs pension schemes with his tax grab. What a shame he didn't focus on high earners' tax avoidance schemes instead!!!!!!!

There you go again, turning into a Tory v Labour issue. Very odd that you called someone blinkered for the same thing...

So his father used tax avoidance and is now dead - how does that make Cameron a hypocrite ? There's not even a suggestion in that article that he continues to use it.
