Now there’s a name from my childhood. I can remember my dad marvelling at him and Dexter at the Manor Ground in Worthing when they used to do a Sussex cricket week.

Another bit of my childhood gone. Back in the days when counties played six days a week of county cricket and friendlies against local clubs on a Sunday I remember seeing Sussex play Polegate on the rec on the late 50s - I worked the scoreboard and got a free tea! I'm pretty sure Jim Parks was in the team that day............

Anyway, RIP Mr. Parks, Sussex and England.

I received my first cricket award from Jim Parks 32 years ago at a dinner in the Trevor at Glynde.

He spoke fondly of Sussex and was very committed to the county.

His career ended before my time, having spent three years at Somerset. Still playing in his forties, as some did. A man of Sussex though. And a long time servant.

RIP Sunny.

Was the oldest surviving English Test cricketer.

Lovely anecdote. Thanks for sharing.

Jim was one of the greatest. A genuinely world class wicket keeper batsman, a lovely bloke and pure Sussex. RIP Jim.

Jim Parks. My all time Sussex hero. Watched him batting so freely when I was a Junior Member in the early 60s and then followed his England career alongside Lord Ted.

Thanks for the correction and interesting link. All four won't have played much in the same side as Dexter retired in 1965 with a brief, unsuccessful comeback in 1968 and Grieg started in 1966. I thought he started later than that. So it can only have been in 1968 when all four were in the same team, but in the same team indeed they were. 1960s memories of Parks, Dexter and Snow together at the County Ground and Lords in and winning the Gillette Cup remain vivid.

Had the pleasure of meeting him on a number of occasions and he even invited me to sit on the committee balcony one day at Hove

The match above was Dexter's first game back. He made a double ton and played against Australia in a couple of Tests. Not sure why he was selected though. England had a history of going back to former glories.

Some NAMES in there. The sort of Championship games we needed a new autograph book for.

I had most of them but my sister has since lost my autograph book to check them all out.
As you say some big names for Kent and Sussex playing at the now Priory Meadow Shopping Centre in Hastings.

Another HCGS ex-pupil writes : always the most anticipated partnership when Parks and Dexter teamed up. My memory says it never failed, but that’s what age will do.

This is very sad news. A Sussex legend which I hope the younger generation grows up to appreciate too.

And not a mention of his passing on the BBC Cricket Webshite. Lots of stuff about T20 of course...

A tribute was published 19 hours ago.

I would recommend favouriting the Sussex section to filter what you see, makes things a lot easier.

Remember meeting him and his father at the County Ground a few years ago. He shared his autograph page in my book with another late, great England cricketer! 1A5F3E11-78DD-491F-BFD5-43E17899865C.jpeg188BA137-6567-4AFD-9802-024045EDF50C.jpeg

One of my boyhood heroes.
Had a good chat with him back in 1989, I think it was, at the County Ground.
Lovely fellow.
RIP Jim.

J/P was a little bit before my time, but i this thinking that Jim Parks was his own man and a member of the awkward squad?

Quite ironic that his record 7th wicket stand with M K Smith for England was broken the day before his funeral.

Sadly I can’t be there this morning but Harty Junior is on duty and they will dear old Jim a fitting send off.
