Ahh I love being 39 sometimes, haven't a scooby who Jay-Z is or what he does other than what I have gleaned from a few threads on here. I imagine he drives a blinged up Bentley though in bright orange with some large bootied Ho's for company. I've never considered Hip hop/Rap as music, it seems more like angry street poetry.

Im no Jaz Z fan but this is a decent performance and worthy of the Headline. Personally thought the Oasis opener was quality, can see Noel having hte right hump about it.

You can slate it all you want but youre kidding yoursleves. The crowd look like they are loving it. Saying that the Pyramid crowd are the lowest common denominator of person at GLasto anyway.

I am not a hip-hop fan but from my position, which was right in the middle near the front of stage, myself and everyone else was loving it. You could really sense the expectation and anticipation in the run up to the gig. I have not been to many gigs with this feeling before. The crowd loved it and trust me he went down very very well. I thought the opening film was funny, and the Wonderwall sing-along amusing ...especially with Jay-Z pretending to strum a guitar and staring out into space.

I understand the set was tailored towards a non-hip-hop crowd by it's use of samples but Jay-Z came to start a party and that's what he did.

He probably isnt the greatest hip-hop artist there is but he was great at Glasto, and he won the day.

I've read a few reports in the press that concur with my view of his opening gambit, too, though. I don't think the crowd were singing along to Wonderwall in defiance, they just loved the song - and that throws the joke back on Jay-Z.

Some reports have also said that his performance was underwhelming. Others have been seduced by all his hype.

Fairplay, though Chappers, I didn't know all that stuff about him. That is hard work. Maybe I'm just too much a fan of old school late eighties' / early nineties hip-hop...

.

I am a little puzzled by your comments. I really cannot for one minute see how almost a 100,000 people singing along to songs, doing 'diamonds' and 'bouncing' is underwhelming. Anything but. And I also think you're reading too much into the opening sing-a-long.

jay-z totally pulled it off.
the intro and all the set i managed to catch were f***ing great... massive crowd out there for him too. everyone i spoke to loved it.

Agree. It was one of the best openings to a set I've seen in ages. Humour, a mass sing-a-long and then pure mentalism when he did a banging version of 99 Problems.

With hind-site I think Glasto needed a little kick-up-the-arse and it certainly got it this year. I was thinking about maybe making this my last one in a while....but sitting at home now I cannot wait for next year.

Micheal Eavis you are a star.

YouTube - Jay-Z Glastonbury 2008 Wonderwall Oasis cover 99 Problems

.....EastLondon thinks this is underwhelming and the crowd are not liking it?

Yes!

And the first three comments on there sum up what I watched on the telly...

I think the best bit of the show was "wonderwall" all went downhill rapidly from there. Very bland and a lot better groups better than Jay Z on the weekend.. And I was there to see jay z and felt let down.. The Verve stole the show, also Elbow!!

jay z what a pisstake.if he wanted to win over glasto you dont do it by taking the piss out of the biggest band in UK

andresmurdoch
The crowd sang wonderwall louder than jay z´s song. He had to start with oasis and then with AC/DC to get the fans interested.

I dont want to go round and round in this discussion but it is my opinion that the vast majority of the crowd loved it and in my opinion the reaction of the Glasto crowd (not youtube viewers) backs this up.

Have to say I agree with ELS. Jay Z's own music is quite frankly SHITE. His Wonderwall plan backfired a bit and despite not being there Oasis still managed to get Glastonbury going.

Long live Brit-pop and f*** hip-hop. I trust Noel Gallagher will get Jay Z back somehow.

Certainly from my perspective he went down as well as any other main act. However I do think the Pyramid stage audience would cheer a frog farting if they'd been told that it was the #1 farting frog in the world.

Oh Come on relying on youtube comments to back up an argument is weak. They are probably just sore as Oasis fans. Several people on this thread were actually THERE and said it was great but you still think otherwise?

As I said I dont even like Jay Z but that was a good performance that went down.

As far as it goes I'm not a fan of Hip Hop but fair play to the man and Michael Eavis for trying something slightly different at Glastonbury. Ti be honest I rather liked Jay-Z's performance. I rather like Oasis but I also think that Noel Gallager is a shit stirring gobshite and will be where John Lydon (who ironically I heard on XFM this morning and a little surprisingly found myself agreeing with what he had to say) before he gets much older. Mr G is forever slagging somebody off and frankly he's getting to be a prize wanker.

I just get rather bored with people insulting others just because they have a different taste in music, after all it would be bloody tedious if there was just Brit Pop to hear.

I've just got back home from Glasto.

Went to see Jay Z out of curiosity. Was in the inner circle near the front for Amy Winehouse and then it went mental for Jay Z - in a bad way. Loads of chavy types I hadn't seen during most of the weekend came in acting like twats and pushing their way about. Everyone was getting completly crushed. Someone chucked a cup of piss over people. The video to introduce him and the start of his set was pretty good but I got bored very quickly and couldnt handle the crush. Somehow managed to get out of it and left the area. Loads of people had the same idea as a lot were piling away. Prefered Atillas rapping on Sunday!
